Key government initiatives represent a new way of doing business. Aboriginal Business Development Initiative - The ABDI, announced April 9, 1999, is a $21 million package of measures designed to improve business development opportunities for Aboriginal peoples in Canada. It includes initiatives to improve access to capital, create an Aboriginal Business Services Network, and enhance the delivery of existing business support programs to Aboriginal entreprenerus and organizations.

Climate Change - The Government of Canada is acting on its international Kyoto Protocol commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to six percent below 1990 levels by the period between 2008 and 2012. The Climate Change Action Fund will use $150 million of federal funding over three years as well as private sector and other government funding to support early actions to reduce GHG emissions, as well as efforts to increase understanding of the impacts, costs and benefits of the Protocol's implementation. Sixteen "Issue Tables" comprised of 450 experts from across Canada, are developing and analyzing various options open to Canada for meetings its commitments, and will make recommendations for a national implementation strategy.

Connecting Canadians - Connecting Canadians is the Government of Canada's vision and plan to make Canada the most connected country in the world. It is a six-part initiative to make Canada a world leader in developing and using advanced information and communications technologies to achieve its social and economic goals in the knowledge-based economy.

La Francophonie - In celebrating the Year of La Francophonie in Canada, the federal government wishes to acknowledge the contribution of all Francophone Canadians to our society. Industry Canada is joining with Canadian Heritage and other departments to highlight Francophone successes in spheres of activity as wide-ranging as youth, new technologies, the economy, tourism, education, history and culture.

Millennium - The Millennium Bureau of Canada administers the Canada Millennium Partnership Program and coordinates millennium activities on behalf of the Government of Canada. The Bureau also acts as a national information centre for initiatives put forward by Canadians that will provide lasting benefits for future generations.

Rural - The Government of Canada is striving to build stronger rural communities where Canadians can continue to live and work. All departments and agencies of the Government of Canada are working together, under the umbrella of the Canadian Rural Partnership, to improve access to the programs, services and other tools that will help rural Canadians to take advantage of new economic and employment opportunities.

Sustainable Development - Along with other federal government departments, Industry Canada has a Sustainable Development Strategy which commits the department to work in partnership with industry, consumers and other key stakeholders to advance sustainable development and contribute to a knowledge-based economy. The strategy's objectives are: foster a marketplace climate that promotes sustainable development; enhance the ability of Canadian firms to develop and use innovative technologies and tools that contribute to sustainable development; encourage trade and investment flows which contribute to sustainable development; and, continue to improve Industry Canada's capacity to manage and deliver policies, programs and operations which contribute to sustainable development.

Team Canada Inc - Team Canada Inc (TCI) is the network of federal departments and agencies that delivers international business development services to Canadians. From its initial launch involving three departments in September 1997, the TCI team has since expanded to encompass 23 federal departments and agencies.

Y2K - The Government of Canada is committed to addressing the Year 2000 issue. All levels of government are working in close partnership with the private sector and Canadian consumers to assist them in their Year 2000 efforts. We continue to share information with Canadians to further facilitate dialogue to address possible solutions to the Year 2000 challenge.

Youth - The Youth Employment Strategy is the Government of Canada's action plan to help young Canadians access career information, learning opportunities and work experience. Canada's Youth Employment Strategy provides young people with information and opportunities to help them get the skills, knowledge and work experience they need for a successful career. The Strategy brings together a number of existing Government of Canada programs and services for youth. It also creates new youth programs and services through partnerships with business, labour, industry, non-profit organizations, communities and other levels of government.
