Street Youth Go Online

OTTAWA, November 15, 1996 -- Industry Minister John Manley today launched Street Youth Online - an innovative program to provide access to the information resources of Rideau Street Youth Enterprises through Canada's SchoolNet.

"It is crucial that Canada's young people get the skills and experience they need to participate in the knowledge-based economy of the future," said Manley. "This program shows that young people facing significant employment challenges can contribute to, and learn from, the resources available on the Information Highway, while developing skills that will help them to make a living."

This initiative results from an innovative partnership between Rideau Street Youth Enterprises, which received a contract under Industry Canada's SchoolNet Digital Collections Program, and the Learning Centre of the Ottawa Board of Education, supported by the Ottawa-Carleton Learning Foundation.

"Rideau Street Youth Enterprises takes great pride in having developed Street Youth Online for the Information Highway," noted Nancy Mitchell, Chair. "We congratulate Industry Canada for supporting on-the-job experience for street youth, who are gaining key multi-media and Internet skills as a result."

"The Ottawa Board of Education recognizes that this partnership involving Industry Canada, the social services sector, and the private sector is extremely beneficial to youth," said Carola Lane, Director of Education. "We are pleased to contribute our own multimedia, Internet, and skills development expertise to this project and to the SchoolNet Digital Collections Program."

Street Youth Online was produced by a team of four young people from the Ottawa street youth community, who developed the material to be digitized, designed the graphics, and coded the material in HTML. The product can be viewed at the SchoolNet Digital Collections Web site: http://collections.ic.gc.ca/
