Governor seeks options before declaring deficit
TALLAHASSEE · Gov. Jeb Bush backed off his refusal to acknowledge that Florida faces a budget deficit, saying on Friday that he simply needs more time to consider what to do about $265 million in red ink that looks certain to grow.

Experts warn of hateful reactions
During World War II, more than 120,000 Japanese-Americans were forced by the U.S. government to abandon almost all their possessions and move into enclosed internment camps scattered through remote areas of the West.

Uneasy nation is on alert amid pursuit of terrorists
A mournful and patriotic nation was kept on high alert Friday as U.S. military and political leaders intensified their pursuit of terrorists responsible for the assaults in New York and Washington.

Attacks could exacerbate Florida's budget shortfall
TALLAHASSEE · Gov. Jeb Bush and legislative leaders conceded Wednesday that the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York almost certainly will deepen Florida's budget shortfall and could force even harsher cuts in state programs and services.

Attacks test the Bush presidency
Less than a year into his presidency, George W. Bush faces a challenge that no other president in the last 60 years has encountered -- to calm an outraged nation and send proof to the world that "America's freedom will be defended."

POLL

Many commentators have said that "America will never be the same" after Tuesday's terror attacks. What do you think the most sweeping change will be?

We have lost our sense of security, the notion that we are safe from the world's problems.
We will emerge from this tragedy as a stronger and more patriotic nation.
We will lose some personal freedoms to tough security measures and government's need to gather intelligence.
We will become a more militaristic nation, quicker to fight those who threaten us.
