Inmates and Horses: In the middle of Florida’s horse country, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has opened a prison farm that is used to retire, rehabilitate and, in many cases, save from the slaughterhouse, old and injured racehorses. They cared for by minimum-security inmates who learn about horses in the barn and inside the classroom. Staff Photographer Nicholas R. Von Staden documents the project.

Spencer's battle: Heart transplant recipient Spencer Crawford and his mother, Ellen, celebrated his first birthday at their home in Boynton Beach in June 2001. Sharks have become the object of of an international conservation movement, but fishermen who make their living from the creatures are afraid of losing their livelihood.
