Basenotes says:
The second men's fragrance by Carolina Herrera. This unique fresh fragrance is packaged in a delightful metal and glass bottle with a magnetic lid (Designed by Fabien Baron). One of Basenotes' current favourites.

Basenotes visitors say:
"Finally tried 212 after being told countless times it was great and was very disappointed. It lacks originality and creativity. It sort of reminds me of Miracle, but Miracle is more floral, more unique, and more natural (i.e. less of a 'chemical' smell). Ultimately, this cologne falls well short of living up to the famous area code after which it is named.
I like the magnetic cap, however."
by Grateful Dave , USA , 2003/06/24.

"How can anybody NOT like this fragrance. Im not great at describing scents, so im not going to try. What i will say is that this is one of those fragrances I cant resist sniffing, just to get a good nostril full!!! This stuff is like a drug - i think im addicted."
by Tarby , UK , 2003/06/15.

"I've sampled 212 twice now, and find it relatively short-lived and basically pretty "safe." But, safe is the original 1881 or Old Spice, not a concept that a 212 area code should conjure up! The freshly-cut grass note is pleasantly distinct and the best part of the cologne. It's there on the skin right after you apply.... It's fun! I like it a grea deal. Sadly, it's fleeting. I've never gotten a compliment when wearing 212--man or woman, straight or gay, family or stranger. That's generally a bad sign. Now that Manhattan has run out of 212 phone numbers (as a general rule, new residents get 646 or 917 area codes), perhaps this Carolina Herrera should also been seen as having had its big moment of fame, and now is a standard supporting cast member at best, a venerable ol' has-been at worst. If it's on sale, buy it as a way to remember how FLEETING the razzle-dazzle of The Big Apple can be."
by S , USA , 2003/04/27.

"Thank God, I'm not the only one, who doesn't care for 212! Right from the bottle it's actually pretty good: I like the fresh citrus notes, pepper and that "metallic" (=spice leaves, basil perhaps?) notes it has. But in a couple of hours it changes a lot: It becomes to a very floral and oh, so boring scent. Every time I've decided to give it a try, I have later regret that decision. Sorry all 212-fans out there, but this one doesn't work for me at all. I prefer Emporio Armani Lui over 212 in every way."
by Tero , Finland , 2003/03/29.

"I didn't like it when I first tried it, but 212 grew on me. Slighty effeminate, offset by incense, lingering ginger: this one is not as boring as I had first thought it."
by That1Guy , USA , 2003/03/27.

"This is a very nice cologne. I didn't like it at first, but after a while I started enjoying it more. The sandalwood smell it gives off after a while is really nice, and makes the cologne. Also, as the other posts have mentioned, the sprayer on this bottle is awesome."
by Sam , USA , 2003/03/27.

"212 was a fragrance that I set out to buy specifically after reading all the wonderful reviews on Basenotes. Even though I'm giving this one a thumbs-up, I have good news and bad news about it.
The good news is that the scent is indeed incredible. It's hard to define, but I catch a refreshing yet "dark" citrusy feel from it. Straight-out, the scent is a winner. And, yes, the packaging is way cool. The base of the cap is magnetic and pulls the cap down when you put it back on. Want to have some fun? When wearing 212, leave the cap off, then ask someone who doesn't know about the magnetic cap to close it for you. When the cap "snaps" down, it'll freak them out for a second and it's worth a cheap laugh.
Anyway, on to the bad news. On my skin - and I realize it may just be an issue with my skin - it doesn't last very long at all. I've even applied numerous squirts of the stuff to my neck before going out, and the scent just doesn't last very long on me. It's really a pity, considering what a high-quality fragrance 212 possesses. I still give a "thumbs-up" to 212; despite its inability to stick around, it's still a very high-quality fragrance."
by DJ Badger Kelley , USA , 2003/03/14.

"I wore this at the club and the women couldn't resist. Purchase this product and you will not be disappointed! "
by Dwayne , USA , 2003/02/21.

"I'm amazed at the positive reviews and popularity of this cologne. When I tried it both myself and my date found it to be 'disgusting'. I couldn't shower it off quickly enough. This is a VERY effeminate scent; the flower notes seem to dominate in a sickening, allergy provoking way.
(P.S. I have tried MANY of the scents on the market and this is easily one of the worst.)"
by Incubus , Canada , 2003/01/15.

"Until a few weeks ago, I hadn't used 212 for about a year. I reintroduced myself to it recently and I'm very happy that I did. It's a fantastic fragrance! The green, floral, woodsy and incense notes are wonderfully executed. It's a fragrance that exudes strength and a subtle, confident sexiness. Living in NYC, I often sniff my arm, wearing 212, as I walk down the street. The fragrance, with its vibrance and allure is a keen representation of what makes NYC great! "
by Bill Good , USA , 2002/12/13.

"Sophisticated, urban and versatile, 212 has everything to offer. A differrent fragrance from the routine type. Long lasting at the same time subtle. Excellently crafted fragrance. "
by Imran Lilani , Pakistan , 2002/11/05.

"Because of the rave reviews 212 has received on our forum, I have tested this time and again. Each time I come away with a negative impression. It has a great start, but then . . . . the incense note. Suddenly the fresh and slightly floral headnotes are completely erased by the dull, flat scent of incense. I can smell nothing else. This could very likely be my personal skin chemistry. It seems that most scents with incense notes do not work for me. A reluctant thumb's-down."
by Thomas Ditsch , 2002/08/01.

"THIS STUFF IS THE SHIT. A+. Gold star. 10 on the Richter scale and a 5 on the Fujita scale. WOW. DAMN! This is going to work good in our hot, humid, marine environment where I live. Did I mention that I really like 212?"
by Ben Lee , 2002/07/18.

"Sometimes you come across a fragrance with which you closely identify, not necessarily because it's extremely beautiful, sexy, or unique; it just has characteristics which makes you feel very comfortable, and mirrors your personality. Herrera 212 is just that.
To me, 212 is modern, urban, slightly edge, but also sensitive and refined. Love this one-it's like a second skin. "
by ferrari_63074 , 2001/09/06.

"See now this is the thing about 212, a lot of people on the forum like it and it is a good scent BUT its B-O-R-I-N-G. nothing original. textbook lavender citrus woody fragrance. YAAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNN! If ya like it enjoy it, its excellently crafted and of great quality but it aint got any zip to it. [UPDATE: July 2002, Al likes 212 now!]"
by Ali Nakhai , 2001/08/30.

"Hererra 212 I've always liked, and to this day, there is nothing that really smells like it. I like the character of the fragrance, very urban and gritty, yet romantic at the same time. "
by ferrari_63074 , 2001/08/25.

"I give this Five marks.I have never met a woman who did not like this stuff.I has become my signature scent.I wear this when ever I need "aromatherapy"if that actually exists. It always makes me feel good about myself."
by Fred O¹Neal , 2001/07/10.

"Carolina Herrera hit the nail on the head with this fragrance! This fragrance is the world's most intriguing area code (212 - New York City)... BOTTLED!
ABSOLUTELY arousing in *EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD* this fragrance is just hair-rasing! From the moment you feel the MINIMALISTIC designed bottle with mysterious magnetic cap, to spraying the fragrance you will fall in love with it. The mister/sprayer is even TOP NOTCH. It sprays a fine mist, rather than "droplets." It's amost as if mists the fragrance more lightly. A light hue of white mist appears and GENTLY falls onto the skin. Within seconds 212 -simply- goes to work. ALL DAY LONG.
The scent itself captures mood, expression, style and PASSION. ANY discriminating individual of style will without a doubt incorporate Ms. Herrera's 212 Men into their daily routine. 212 Men... a very INTENSE experience... BOTTLED! Thank you Carolina Herrera! "
by Jeffery Primeau , 2001/06/21.
