M7 fragrance notes:

Top Notes
Bergamot, Mandarin, Rosemary

Middle Notes
Vetiver, Agarwood

Base Notes
Amber, Musk, Mandrake root.

Basenotes says:
The first male scent from YSL since Tom Ford took the helm, is packaged in a deep brown bottle with a silver band at the top. The fragrance contains notes of Agarwood and is a fresh and woody sensual scent. Created by Alberto Morillas (Tommy, cK One, Angel...) and Jacques Cavalier (Issey, Ultraviolet..). The fragrance is so called as it is the seventh mens YSL brand.

Basenotes visitors say:
"To me, M7 smells a bit like Opium for five minutes, and then becomes something that reminds me strongly of Diesel Zero Plus."
by Renato Alessio , Australia , 2003/05/02.

"M7... the only thing I can't stand about M7 is the fact that I didn't discover it sooner.
The scent is rich, thick, deep, CRYPTIC... without trying too hard.
It's intense and very unique and I find it quite wearable. It's one of those scents that are really hard to explain, and one that is a "like it or hate" it fragrance I think.
The bottle is also quite impressive. A case of "less is more."
This stuff screams "Oriental-based," and is EXTREMELY wearable in my eyes.
I just love it."
by Jeffery Primeau , USA , 2003/04/29.

"Im a big YSL fan and M7 is great the best new scent in years. Its almost a spooky mysterious scent.I thought it went on a little weak but held up very nice and was still there the next morning.YSL has done it again cant wait for there next."
by EJ baldasarre , USA , 2003/04/22.

"smells like ginger... I don't like it, but other EDTs from YSL are my faves..."
by Mariusz , Poland , 2003/04/18.

"The most friendly mens fragrance of 2002.YSL again proved its high level. The mild woody notes remind russian "banya". The only problem is endurance which is quite short. And the advertizing campaign to my opinion doesn't correspond the scent."
by Eugene , Russia , 2003/03/19.

"I applied a sample of YSL M7 on the recommendation of a trusted sales woman at Nordstroms. I found the head to be too acrid just overpowering. I politely passed on it (as I questioned her judgement). An hour later I met my girlfriend. She asked what I was wearing. She found the scent to be "dark" and "dangerous" but compelling. I checked the wrist where I hade applied the M7 and found that the fragrance had lost it's harsh edge and evolved into a woodsy, pipe tobacco scent. I went back and purchased a bottle. It's appropriate for fall and winter evenings. Not what I would consider a formal EDT like Envy by Gucci, but a niche scent that is perfect for a jazz club or a quiet night at her place. M7 is a welcome expansion to the familiar olfactory spectrum!"
by Mytu Scents , USA , 2003/03/02.

"M7 - Clearly there are mixed reviews by Joe Public on this fragrance. I have worked in a large open plan fragrance store and was asked to try and promote this fragrance. Reluctantly i did, because like many people who have posted their thoughts on the fragrance on this site, i didn't like it very much. However some of the lovely ladies i worked with sprayed some on me, i still didn't like it very much but that didn't matter because it seemed to have the Lynx effect. Seriously girls seem to love the fragrance. I think it must be the sandalwood i believe which is an ingredient that is a known aphrodisiac. Not the best fragrance out at the moment but women love it so if you guys want some attention, BUY IT!"
by Tom Stanesby , UK , 2003/02/21.

"The best new over-the-counter fragrance of the year. Destined to be a landmark fragrance. Elegant, unmistakeable, and masculine."
by Rick , USA , 2003/02/12.

"This doesn't wear well on me (the spices take over and the wood gets a bit lost, very Opium-like results), and it's a bit mature for my tastes, but it's a high-quality fragrance. Very complex, rich, and interesting. It has incredible staying power; sprayed some on my wrist about 7 hours ago, still smelled it on myself when I got in the car. I applied it only to my wrists, but while I was walking I actually smelled it coming up my sleves and out the neck of my shirt -- you won't need to use much of this stuff. On someone else I imagine this will smell fantastic."
by Christopher , USA , 2003/02/10.

" I have been wearing this smashing fragrance since late October when it became available, with excellent feedback I might add. I've purchased the complete line and will continue to use it until warmer weather. If dosed properly, it is wonderfully warm, with a burnt caramel type of middle note and a dry, rich ambery drydown. Very sensual and very unique. If you haven't had the opportunity to try it out, it's well worth a trip to your local store. And no, it doesn't smell like cat piss. Comments like that are gratuitous and downright silly. From the compliments I get, that couldn't be further from the truth!"
by Mario Leonard , Canada , 2003/01/29.

"Beurk! That stuff is awful! Glad I didn't buy it!"
by F Blais , Canada , 2002/12/23.

"Wow! M7 has really got IT! It's deep, dark and dangerous and leaves an irresistible trail... Wonderful. "
by Tigrushka , Finland , 2002/12/16.

"I cannot stand this scent...it sounded like i would love it, but even though it starts out promising, it then devlops into something nauseatingly sweet and thick that i could not wash off fast enough. Well, i'm glad. one less scent i have to procure. As for the ads: who cares? about time we got to see some male full frontal, if for no other reason than equality. yeah, yeah, yeah...but then i'm female and sick and tired of seeing naked women and no naked men (not that i care to see either. but hey, fair's fair)."
by Harper Hilton , USA , 2002/12/12.

"It's very dark, smooth and thick. But sooo goood. You can think this one as a dark guy's scent. I can't think this on blonds... it's a heavy scent. But strong, magnetic, maybe addictive. It's got power!"
by B Abbott , Germany , 2002/12/12.

"I was expecting to be bowled over by this scent. I was not. Let me say that I do like the scent but wish it would have been taken to the next level. While the first 5 minutes out of the bottle might be strong, the scent all but disappears on me after about an hour. There are traces left, but not nearly what the first 5 minutes promised. It seems like a bit of a cop out for the American market to me. What makes the scent unique should have been played up instead of watered down."
by Steve , USA , 2002/12/02.

"Fantastic = Tom Ford is a genius! After years of being sold 'light and fresh' fragrances that don't last, someone has finally come up with a new classic. I bought it 4 weeks ago and can't stop wearing it - I love it!"
by Alex , UK , 2002/11/26.

"At first I didn't like this scent. I was expecting a lot from all the hype but at first it seemed a little old manish. REALLY woodsy and spicy. It does grow on you though. I have to say that it has a nice rich drydown that lasts for hours. I would say this scent is a much more woodsy desire. overall score 7 out of 10. Memoire and Rococo are better new scents."
by Mike Hoffman , USA , 2002/11/25.

"I like the fragrance although it's very similar to old fragrances like Fendi Uomo."
by Nelson Peresvalle , El Salvador , 2002/11/20.

"I got a sample of this last week and have been testing it. I think it is a good fragrance and certainly a refreshing shift in fragrance trends - if it does become a trend, that is. However, I can't see what all the excitment is about. I find the agarwood rather subdued. If one wanted a real agarwood fragrance, the way to go is Madini: Agarwood, Oud or Bouquet. I have been using the Bouquet for about a week and the heady, intense fragrant mix of agarwood and woody-spices is intoxicating. The Oud is a little more of a conventional mixture while the Agarwood is - as one would imagine - the pure, almost medicinal scent, strong and very woody. There are also the fragrances from Swiss-Arabian but all the ones that I have tried have such an overwhelming mixture of sweet, sweet florals - mainly roses - and oriental notes that the the aroma is quite nauseating. I find M7 reminds me of Opium Pour Homme but the spices have been replaced by woods.
Then, too, I am pretty jaded when it comes to Oriental scents since that is what I normally wear and have worn for the last thirty years.
I think that the ads that I have seen in the European magazines are audacious - to say that least - but Idon't think that North America is ready - or willing -to have a scent sold by a guy showing his genitals."
by Rob Machon , USA , 2002/10/25.

"I have to agree with my bud Rob...especially the bit about the genitals."
by CJ , USA , 2002/10/25.

"I picked up the M7 body wash yesterday and used it this morning.
It's great! There is a stronger herbal/citrus aura to the gel than in the fragrance. It makes for an invigorating and intriguing way to start off the day"
by Bill Good , USA , 2002/10/25.

"(follow up)I wore my sample today and I'm totally in love with this fragrance! Okay smitten!
Received numerous comments from woman but I found that some of my guy friends at work did not like it one bit."
by Scentimus , USA , 2002/10/18.

"I really want to like this scent, but I'm finding it's too heavy and aggressive for me to wear regularly. If it is available in a milder concentration, such as an after-shave balm or body lotion, I will probably spring for it. But the cologne itself...I don't know.
It could be that I didn't get much in the spray from the sample, but it seemed to be very intense for a few hours and then significantly taper off. And I swear that now it smells faintly like women's Opium. Yes, it's true!"
by Stelthbear , USA , 2002/10/15.

"The scent is just saturated with Oud/Agarwood, In my time I've never smelled so much of this wood in a Western Fragrance before. It was so deep that if I inhaled too much from the back of my hand I could actually feel it burn in the back of my throat. An eau de parfume version of this baby would knock your soxs off.
I find that the scent just does not change that much. What you spray out is what you get. In the down dry after about 30mins it becomes very powdery almost like talc power with the deep wood note/spicy incense, at this point its reminding me of a perfume my mom wore once.
I can't even describe any more on it, for it doen't evolve any further.
Once again I totally agree with Ali, this is going to have a very limited market. Nu for woman was not a big seller where I live, now your lucky to find a few bottles spotted in the back counter not in the main display cases. This scent may sell big in New York and Meto areas were people tend to be more trendy and night life is more greater, in mid town USA this will just dive bomb...I predict it will slowly disappear as Opium Pour Homme did.
Don't get me wrong I love the scent and believe many of us here will too. BUT, its not an every day scent, I could picture myself wearing it on a cold night with a black wool turtleneck sweater in a black leather coat dress up to go out somewhere.
They were also very smart to launch this in fall here...NOT a SUMMER/SPRING scent.
All I can say those of us who wanted something different well Tom has given it to us here at Basenotes."
by Scentimus , USA , 2002/10/13.

"i love the scent myself, primarily because it is different.. cant wait for my full bottle! the girl at the YSL counter today said they have no info on it, and it wont be in till next year. importing seems the good option!"
by Nik B , Australia , 2002/10/12.

"..to me this smelled like piss water, but if it can sack a chick i'll put up with wearing it!"
by Mr Smellgood , USA , 2002/10/10.

"In one word, fantastic! I think that M7 will be a scent that people will either love or hate, with very little room for a middle ground. As I wear it more and familiarize myself with it, I'm finding the agarwood to be very seductive and intriguing, even addicting! "
by Bill Good , USA , 2002/10/08.

"Wow! This fragrance is dark.. very dark. It is dominated by agarwood, which gives off an almost cigar type smell. This is a quality perfume, but it maybe too pure and 'thick' for many people. Interesting name choice for a company like YSL, it sounds almost like a new BMW, or a special agent."
by Nik B , Australia , 2002/07/13.
