Elementary endgames (Part 8)
Rook plus a lone Pawn vs. a Rook may look simple, but appearances are deceiving. The Lucena position, the Philidor position, checking distance, the long side & short sides of the Pawn, and Nalimov tablebases all help us to understand this common type of endgame.

ANDYTHEBLUE asks,
When are two Rooks worth more than a Queen? 'How would I know whether to swap two Rooks for a Queen and vice versa? I remember losing a game and the memory stops me from doing it again.' Can you help Andy?

'National Chess Survey Reveals The Truth About Chess :
Why People Play and What Scares Them Away' 'Whether it's creative versions of speed chess or stunning PC games, Chess is wildly popular these days.' Sounds great, doesn't it? But then there's this : 'Bobby Fisher is seen by 61% of those surveyed to be the biggest hero in chess, followed by sixteen-time World Champion Anatoly Karpov.' In Manhattan Chess Club, capafan2003 says, 'I'm doing some research on J.R. Capablanca and learned about the Manhattan Chess Club and its legacy. I read the club closed in 2002 due to a lack of funds. Can anyone elaborate on what the consequences have been?'

If you're a news-hungry, English-speaking chess player,
getting the latest on the 2003 World Computer Chess Championship in Graz, Austria, is not as easy as it should be. The
official site
is mainly in German, while two days before the end of the event, held 22-30 November, sponsor
International Computer Games Association
still says little more than 'We will be there with the latest ideas and software in computers and games'.
ChessBase is the best source of news, perhaps because their program Fritz, a former World Champion, is one of the leading contenders.
See
ChessBase.com and
search on 'Graz' for all ChessBase stories on the event.

Two of the chess world's most controversial personalities appeared this week in feature stories.

A Buddhist Retreat in the Kalmyk Flats by Simon Ostrovsky
FIDE President Ilyumzhinov wears two hats. One hat says FIDE; the other says Kalmyk Republic. FIDE we know, but Kalmykia? 'What's more surprising is the abundance of portraits of the republic's president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who seems out to create his own little personality cult.'

Checkmate for Grandmaster by Shane Green
'Bobby Fischer's attacks on the United States and his anti-Semite remarks have made him a pariah. Shane Green tries to find the man, regarded by many as the world's best chess player, to see why he turned himself into a pawn.'
