IMDb Recommends...

Making Fantasia 2000 took an amazing amount of chutzpah on the part of the Walt Disney Co. The original, classic Fantasia was a 1940 stiff--a delicate bit of art released to a world at war--that only turned a profit some 30+ years later. But Fantasia 2000 is a lighter work than the original, and consequently, it fared much better. The film clips along at a brisk pace, interspersed with a divergent selection of presenters, and some glorious interpretations of classics by Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Gershwin. People cite different favorites, including the combination of breaching whales and Respighi's "Pines of Rome," or the perennial classic, Mickey Mouse and Dukas's "Sorcerer's Apprentice" (the one segment that Walt Disney dictated should be in each ensuing iteration of Fantasia releases). 2000 also has done a public service for Elgar, forever freeing his "Pomp and Circumstance" from the staid ignominy of its current title as the "graduation song." Armed with a Macromedia "Flash" player the official Disney site is a classy presentation of this feisty combination of visuals and music, perhaps the most noble of all the Disney experiments.
