Luminaries of the Genre

IMDb Recommends...

It's time to recognize 1994 as one of the all-time great years for movies. Along with the crowd-pleasing Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Lion King, and the critic-pleasing Pulp Fiction and Nobody's Fool, there was Quiz Show. Quiz was based upon the true account of the rise and fall of Charles Van Doren (played by Ralph Fiennes), an intellectual who became a celebrity on the rigged game show, "21." The revelations of the fix became another rude awakening for an American public that had forgotten the White Sox scandal and hadn't yet heard of the Watergate hotel. Sadly, this thoughtful, subtle film met with a disbelieving, contemporary audience, unable to feature a national frenzy centered around a prime-time game show (insert own Regis Philbin joke here). Quiz's ad campaign focused on the back of Fiennes's head (a great scene from the film, but hardly a one-sheet) and the movie met with indifferent box office. If you haven't experienced Robert Redford's crisp direction, Paul Attanasio's smart adaptation, a fine cast, and the Naugahyde and torchére cinematography of Michael Ballhaus, see the best film of 1994, Quiz Show.
