In 2005 US championship wild cards, The America's Foundation for Chess (AF4C) announced that former World Champion challenger Gata Kamsky and 2003 U.S. Junior Open Champion Salvijus Bercys have been named as wild card selections for the U.S. Championship (25 November through 5 December 2004). Join the discussion about the list of qualifying players. • There's still one qualifying slot open : Online ‘Champion of Champions’ event. • 'The AF4C, the USCF and the ICC are pleased to announce a new online event of U.S. State Champions, the winner of which will go forward as the final competitor in the 64-player field for the 2005 Chessmaster U.S. Championships in San Diego.'

Who is the U.S. Women's Chess Champion? Last week, while introducing top-level chess events in the offing, we mentioned, 'Reigning U.S Women's Champion Anna Hahn will give a simultaneous exhibition in First Move Chess Challenge 2004' (see Elsewhere on the Web 4 September). This week we received the August 2004 issue of Chess Life, cover adorned with a smiling Jennifer Shahade above the caption 'Unstoppable'. Shahade was selected for the cover story because she 'recently won the U.S. Women's Championship'. How could we have missed that?! Read more...

Finding Bobby Fischer (Part 8)
Just when we thought the story of Bobby Fischer's detention in Japan was old news, Reuters reported the following.

  • Chess Master Fischer Wins Japan Deportation Delay • 'Chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer stayed one move ahead of U.S. authorities on Wednesday when he won a delay in efforts to deport him from Japan. A Japanese court granted an injunction preventing Fischer from being deported until it had ruled on his lawsuit seeking to have the deportation order quashed, his lawyer said.' [8 September]
