The America's Foundation for Chess (AF4C) announced that former World Champion challenger Gata Kamsky and 2003 U.S. Junior Open Champion Salvijus Bercys have been named as wild card selections for the U.S. Championship (25 November through 5 December 2004). This week we received the August 2004 issue of Chess Life, cover adorned with a smiling Jennifer Shahade above the caption 'Unstoppable'.
Shahade was selected for the cover story because she 'recently won the U.S. Women's Championship'.

Finding Bobby Fischer (Part 8) Just when we thought the story of Bobby Fischer's detention in Japan was old news, Reuters reported the following.
Chess Master Fischer Wins Japan Deportation Delay

'Chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer stayed one move ahead of U.S. authorities on Wednesday when he won a delay in efforts to deport him from Japan. A Japanese court granted an injunction preventing Fischer from being deported until it had ruled on his lawsuit seeking to have the deportation order quashed, his lawyer said.'
