How long has it been, if ever, that you've explored your own body, looked at the pores of your skin, the color variations, the patterns of hair growth, noticed the different smells and tastes, felt the firmness or softness of certain areas, listened to the breath as it flows in and out, just | really spent some time getting reacquainted with your physical self? This degree of awareness can be experienced with the five physical senses. It is also very important to be aware of our bodies in another sense, the intuitive sense, getting in touch with the subtle body |
The subtle body consists of energy meridians
(as used in acupuncture and acupressure [shiatsu]), the Chakra system, and the aura or
energy field around the body. In one sense our whole body is energy. We can get more
intuitively in touch with the energy of our body by slowing the breath, and focusing
inward to the many sensations present at any one moment. Depending on where we focus our internal sensing, we will pick up different signals. Notice the difference between how it feels inside your feet--the vibrations, and as it does inside your hands. Notice the similarities. Notice how your hands feel after waving them in the air vigorously for a few seconds. You have generated the energy movement in your hands and wrists and the sensations intensify. Your hands may also feel larger, because the aura has expanded from the movements. The Chakras According to Vedic tradition, Chakras are levels (chakra means wheel in Sanskrit) centered in the spinal column in the body, and expanding out. They are the seat of major vortexes of Kundalini bioenergy. The colors of Chakras come from the idea of white light splitting into the color spectrum as with a crystal. Actually, you can assign any color to a Chakra and work with it though the rainbow spectrum is most commonly used. There is extraordinary power in the use of color. Chakra awareness comes through visualization of a color coordinated to a particular Chakra, by breathing into a Chakra, and by getting in touch with the attributes of a particular Chakra while focusing on that area of your body. When a Chakra is out of balance, the opposite of the respective attribute may be manifesting in your life. Imbalance in the root Chakra may mean aspects of the physical plane are askew, like having financial problems or disarray in your living quarters. Possibly, in the area of sexuality, you may be putting the responsibility on someone else for your comfort level. Your sexuality may feel shut down or be too urgent Visualizing a soothing red or pink energy in the genital area can help smooth out sexual yearning or the opposite, lack of feeling. Some ways imbalance can manifest itself in the second Chakra are disharmony in relationships, emotional flightiness, anxiety and stress. Third Chakra imbalance may appear as everything you try does not work out. This is a signal that you may be self-willing events, rather than going with the flow and accepting what is there for you. Fear, rage, jealousy and greed are all symptoms of the heart Chakra being out of balance. Self-misrepresentation, and being out of touch with what is important to you, can be signs of imbalance in the fifth Chakra. Getting "flaky" may be the case when the third eye is wide open, yet the root Chakra is blocked, so that you are not very grounded in reality. Crown Chakra imbalance may show its self in selfishness, self-centeredness, seeing yourself as all important.

Color: Red Physical realm (base of spine), core sexuality, Centering Process Getting all of these Chakras in balance with each other and running smoothly may sound a little overwhelming. However, it is really a simple process, yet it is a life time pursuit. Do not be hard on yourself or over-identify with the imbalance. One way you can feel more centered and attuned in the moment is to just briefly begin with your root Chakra and go up visualizing the brilliant colors swirling clockwise at each of the seven energy vortexes. This technique can be used simply at any point through out the day to bring back a sense of calm and equilibrium, restoring harmony. Fundamental to getting in touch with the subtle body or energy body are some key areas: focusing, centering, relaxing and grounding. Sitting comfortably slow and smooth your breath. Breathing through your nostrils, using the diaphragm, keep your focus on the point where the air enters and exits. After about ten breaths in and out, a more centered feeling should be realized. Enjoy the calm feelings as you begin to ground more consciously by just relaxing into your body letting go of tension. Visualize red cords of light extending from your tailbone and soles of your feet deep, deep into the earth draining away all tension. Notice how aware you are of the energy running through your body. You may wish to visualize a spout, as a whale has, opening at your crown showering you with warm golden light for added pleasure. Meditations Begin all meditations with a good dose of relaxation. Find a quiet, private area, spread a blanket on the floor for extra cushioning, and cover with a sheet for comfort next to your body. Also, have an additional covering in case you get too cold. You may notice rapid changes in how hot or cold you feel during various practices. It is best NOT to use your bed for these meditations, as you are more likely to fall asleep. You may want to light a candle or some incense, and play soft classical or new age music, or nature sounds. Creating a sacred space for your meditations is a wonderful way to begin to set the tone for deep relaxation and inner awareness. You may have a special object you would also like to have in the room with you, or flowers. Think of anything that will help you set the stage for the work or play--as you may prefer to call it--that is to follow. You may enjoy the use of an essential oil or lotion. Your sacred space is a place just for you and your higher self to become more intimately acquainted. It is also a beautiful gesture to prepare such a space when you are creating special times for you and your partner, or you can create the space together as a form of romantic foreplay. Relaxation Read slowly through the instructions for relaxation, before assuming your relaxation posture. Lie on your back with hips, vertebrae and shoulders straight and even, arms relaxed to the sides and legs spread about shoulders width. You may use a small pillow, no higher than three inches, to tuck under your neck and head. Close your eyes, and begin to inhale and exhale
slowly and smoothly in complete, full breaths. In this full breath you use your nostrils
and diaphragm. Breathe in through the nostrils allowing the stomach area to rise fully and
inhale further as the chest rises. Do not push the air. Without pausing, begin to exhale
slowly and smoothly, allowing the stomach and chest to fall very slowly. This is one
complete breath. FOLLOW THE SENSATIONS DEEPER To maintain a focus, it may help to
repeat the mantra So Hum in your mind as you breath. Hear the sound Soooo in your mind on the inhale and the sound Hhuuumm on the exhale. You may want to read through the

begin
Self-Loving Massage Now that you are relaxed, having let go of the tensions you came in with, take about fifteen minutes to massage your body from toe to head. Slowly read this meditation again and begin. This is a very grounding exercise, and also a pleasurable way to give your body love, and show appreciation to your body for all of its services. Starting with each toe, massage, twist, squeeze, flex pinch, rub, blow on, feather touch, caress the physical. Make it enjoyable. Get the blood flowing and enliven every cell in your body. Proceed to the foot, ankle, calf, knee and thigh doing whatever is pleasing to your body. You may even want to talk to body parts and tell them all of the things they like to hear. Allow yourself to honor your body; really love your legs. Address the genital area, the Yoni or scrotum and Lingam as the sex may be. Notice the smells, the textures, any moisture. Grasp your buttocks, feeling the firmness and roundness and appreciating your buttocks without criticism. Move on being sure to spend no more or less time at the genitals or buttocks as any other area. This is whole body exploration. Massage the hips and stomach. Feel the ribs. Massage and titillate the breasts and chest. Continue to move up to the shoulders rotating, squeezing and stretching. Reach around to grasp and massage you shoulder blades and back. With your finger tips, press in deep at the sides of the spinal column and stretch the flesh back a couple of inches toward the sides. Put your fists into your lower back, circle them around going down to your tailbone, and with fingers use a small pinching motion along the base of the spine waking the energy there. Squeeze your sides as you move up to the shoulders, and down your arms working the muscles, circling the elbows, massaging the lower arms, and rubbing in between the bones in your hands going out to your fingers and finger tips. Come up to your neck, digging into the muscles at the base of the neck and across the shoulders. Move up the neck in a side to side motion stretching the flesh away from the vertebrae, and gently message the front of the neck. Be sure you have not missed a centimeter of your body before proceeding to the face. Pinch the chin; move it around. Gently squeeze and press into your jaw bones and cheeks. Move your nose around, and go lightly over your eyelids. Pinch and rub over your eyebrows, and massage your temples and forehead. Tug gently on the ears and earlobes, and proceed to the scalp massaging deeply in a way that feels just right, not missing a spot. Pay special attention to the crown, enlivening the energy of the seventh Chakra. This completes your self-generated full body massage. Lie back now, and enjoy the heightened sensations of the cells zinging from all of the loving attention. As you go along, you can use these directions as a guide, but remember to keep the focus on what you are feeling, what you are doing, and how you are doing it. Take your time; be self-aware. Notice the difference in emotions as you address different areas, and listen to the messages. Above all, Love Your Body. The better you are at loving your own body the better you will be with your lover. She or he will notice, and silently, if not verbally, will thank you. Chakra Attunement For the final meditation in this section, take about ten minutes to hone in on your Chakras. Use the Chakra Chart in the Chakras section to help guide you. After reading the directions, carefully lie back in the relaxation posture with eyes closed and start with your root Chakra; visualize in your minds eye the color red in this area. Using complete breath techniques, focus and breathe the visualization of red light into the base of the spine strengthening the glow. See the red light coming out of the atmosphere into your nostrils and making a stream down to the perineum, filling the buttocks and genitals with red light. Allow the light to become more and more vibrant and full with each breath filling and bathing every cell in the root Chakra region. Proceed up the body to each Chakra region, filling the Chakra with the corresponding colored light. Let the light beam more brightly with every breath, and relax into the vibrating sensations of fullness. On the exhale, breathe out any toxins or unwanted energy from each area into the universe to be transformed. The color may take on a murky tone as it is exhaled. Breath about twelve complete breaths into each Chakra. As you continue with this practice you will gain more and more awareness and sensation.. In time, situations in your life will take on a more magical, enchanting air. Your inner child will want to come out and play more, and you will feel freer to be yourself. You could begin to feel very emotional during this exercise as opening occurs and blocks are released. Just go with what is happening within, continuing to breathe and visualize. If the intensity grows too uncomfortable, do some grounding exercises such as squatting, or from a standing position, bend at the waist with knees bent slightly and dangle torso, head and arms downward. Also, just walking around, doing some calisthenics, eating or taking a bath can help. Be sure not to jump up to avoid being with surfacing emotions. Closure As a closure to your meditation, take a few minutes and lie still breathing gently, and reflect on what you have experienced. When you are ready, stretch and rise. Rinse hands in cold water for energetic as well as physical cleansing. You may rearrange the room as it was before the meditation, and go on about the rest of your day enjoying the feelings of rejuvenation and heightened self-esteem. © copyright Swami Virato.
