Nationally Approved BSA Historic Trails
Searchable Database of more than 300 trails that have been approved for Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, & family campers. BSA strongly recommends that hikers use only historic trails that have been nationally approved.

Boy Scout Historic Trails Award
From the USSSP site: Love of America and devotion to our country depend upon a thorough appreciation of the ideals, principles, and traditions that have made our country strong. Historic Trails Award requirements emphasize cooperation.
Boy Scout Historic Trail Award
To earn this award, members of your unit must plan and participate in a historic activity. A unit historic activity requires members to do four requirement which are all listed here along with a image of the patch that can be earned.
BSA Historic Trails - Brochure Ordering
The Carolina Trader has brochures with details & images of the medals for trails all over the USA, including: President's Trail (DC), Carlisle Historical Trail (PA), Salisbury-Spencer Trail (NC), Siege of Charleston Trail (SC), & more than a dozen others.
Historic Hiking Trails Nationwide
Most of the trails are sponsored by affiliates of the Boy Scouts of America, generally boy scout troops, local councils or individual adult scouters. To encourage individuals to hike, bike or canoe these trails, these councils have established awards.

The York-Adams Area Council, home to the Gettysburg National Military Park has an article about the need for all scouts to show proper ettiquite when visitng any Historic site.
Southeast USA - Cherokee Trail of Tears
Today, you can contemplate the Trail of Tears as you visit sites along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. Auto tour route highways, closely following the historic land routes, are marked with the official Trail marker to aid you in visiting.
Southwestern USA - Santa Fe Trail

Western US -Lewis & Clark Natl Hist. Tr.
The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail commemorates the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 to 1806.

AR - AR Post Nat'l Memorial Scout Trek
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - Arkansas Post, South of Gillett, AR. Complete the 2 mile hike after viewing a short movie and the exhibits at the visitor center.
AR - Bayou Meto Boy Scout Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - A historical hike through Jacksonville, Arkansas. The beginning of the trail is the Bayou Meto Cemetery parking area.
AR - Saracen Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - Saracen’s Trail is a historical trail that covers approximately 11 miles of city streets and grassy levees. To complete this trail you will be required to have a compass and the skill to use it.
CA - Fages Historic Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The Fages Historic Trail in the hills above Berkeley & El Cerrito commemorates and follows portions of the 1772 trek by a party led by Captain Pedro Fages (pronounced "fah hace") searching for a land route around San Francisco Bay.
CA - Monterey Historical Trail Award
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The Monterey Historical Trail is for anyone who is interested in learning more about the earlier development of Monterey, CA. The Trail has been developed for the purpose of giving units or individual scouts a great learning exp.
CA - Sacramento Historic Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - This is a program conducted by the Golden Empire Council but no information is available on their web site.
CA - Sacramento Historic Train Trail
SCOUT PATCH AVAILABLE - Operated by the Golden Empire Council. Hike the trail as shown on the map, from the Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento to the 13th Street Station and take Light Rail to the Butterfield Station.
CA - San Francisco Presidio Historic Tr.
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - There are separate patches available for Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts. Trails is to the historic former military base called Presidio. Opertated by the San Francisco Bay Area Council, contact them for patch requirements.
CA - Trails near Desert Pacific Council
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The Desert Pacific Council, B.S.A., through the High Adventure Team sponsors a number of High Adventure Awards to encourage participation in outdoor activities. There are many awards available, see Trek Aids # 100.
FL - Florida Historic Hiking Trails Assc
The Florida Historic Trails Association (FHTA) was founded in 1970 for the purpose of developing and sponsoring historic hiking trails for Scouting and other civic youth groups. Six trails are listed here.
GA - Cherokee Trail @ Stone Mtn Park
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - Stone Mountain Historic Trail. The hike starts at Confederate Hall, near the west gate of the park. Obtain plastic bags inside the building from park personnel at the information counter for trash pickup while hiking.
MA - Freedom Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - (GSUSA) Explore Boston's famous Freedom Trail and discover the rich history and architecture of the city. The trail stretches for three miles and includes sixteen historic sites. Operated by the Patriots' Trail Girl Scout Council.
MI - Chief Pontiac Trail
SCOUT TRAIL - Backpacking trail, & patch program with living history events organized by Clinton Valley Council BSA volunteers for youth groups.
MO - Algonquin Trail
3.8 miles around camp BSA Camp Thunderbird's perimeter.....Highlight are some PETROGLYPHS (carving on rocks) from the early Indians. The birds are from south of our area, which leaves the question, were the birds here at one time.
MS - Vicksburg National Military Park
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The Vicksburg Trails Commission (Boy Scouts of America) coordinates three different Scout hikes (including the Al Scheller Trail) on the grounds of Vicksburg National Military Park. This site also provides camping information.
MS - Vicksburg Trails Commission
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - This is the Vicksburg Trails Commission Web Site which serves youth groups wanting to learn more about our nation's history. We have 6 treks available, each with its own unique recognition program.
NC - Guilford Courthouse Historic Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The trail begins at the Lake Brandt Marina, and follows an old railroad bed for about two miles before leading to the Military Park Visitor’s Center where a short film is shown. The trail then follows about a 4.5 mile loop.
NJ - Palisades Historic Trails
The Palisades Historic Trails are made up of portions of the Long Path, on top of the cliffs, and the Shore Trail, under the cliffs by the Hudson River. Both stretch from Fort Lee Historic Park and Northern NJ Council’s Camp Alpine in Alpine, NJ.
NY - Historic Portage Trail Hike
This trail can be covered in several ways – by automobile or bicycle along route 394 from Westfield to Mayville, or by hiking the Upper Trail or Creek Trail as shown on the maps, after visiting historic sites in Westfield. Guidebook & Patch are available
NY - Niagara Frontier Family Trailsd
The Greater Niagara Frontier Council, Boy Scouts of America, has established and maintains the "Niagara Frontier Trail" as an opportunity for families of Scouts, and non-Scouts alike, to discover the rich heritage of the Niagara Frontier.
OR - Oregon Trail Interpretive Center
The Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City Oregon contains both permanent and changing programs. It houses a theater, meeting rooms, a gift shop, restrooms, and administrative offices.
PA - Johnstown Flood National Memorial
The Johnstown Flood National Memorial Presents Girl Scout Try-Its Listening to the Past. Over 2,209 people died on that tragic Friday, and thousands more were injured in one of the worst disasters in our Nation's history.
PA - Lackawanna Valley Heritage Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The Steamtown National Historic Site has entered into a partnership with the Northeast Pennsylvania Council to create the Lackawanna Valley Heritage Trail. This 8-mile hike begins at Steamtown NHS & travels through Scranton PA.
PA = Gettysburg Heritage Trail Program
Scout groups are invited to participate in the Gettysburg Heritage Trail Program sponsored by the BSA York-Adams Area Council, Eisenhower National Historic Site, and Gettysburg National Military Park.
SC - Blue Ridge Railroad Trail
SCOUT PATCH AVAILABLE - This trail in Seneca South Carolina is maintained by Troop 219.who are the Caretakers of ths Historic Trail.
TX - Fort Concho Historical Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - Operated by Concho Valley Council, The Fort Concho Historical Trail takes you not only through this Fort, but also along some of the streets of the settlement of Santa Angela, that was developed to serve the needs of the soldiers.
TX - Fort McKavett Historical Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - Operated by the Concho Valley Council, this trail is designed for scouting groups.. There is a museum to tour as well. As you tour the museum & hike the trail, we encourage you to learn about the life of the soldiers.
TX - Takatchue Pouetsu Trail
A Historic Trail established in 1992 by Georgetown Troop's 151. The Tonkawa Indians called this area, including what is now Williamson County 'Takatchue Pouetsu', which translates to 'The Land of Good Water'. A patch is available.
VA - Colonial Virginia Council Trails
Come hike our "Historic Triangle" trails. You and your Scouts will take part in one of the most exciting local-council historic trail programs. Colonial Virginia Council has three trails including Jamestown, Historic Williamsburg, and Yorktown.
VA - Old Dominion Scout Trail
SCOUT AWARD AVAILABLE - The purpose of the Trail is to promote an understanding of the historical and cultural role involving great Americans beginning beginning with Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech through the development of our country.
