The MacScouter -- Scouting Resources Online

Scouting Clipart is located at a variety of places around the Internet. At some locations you can see the images in gallery pages before you copy them to your computer. At other places you can download individual files or archives of files from directory listings. This page is provided to help you locate clipart. If you have any Scouting images to share with the world, please send them to me. If you have any better information than what is presented here, please send it to me, and I'll update this page:

Where to Get 'Em

The US Scouting Service Project Clipart and Document Site
The USSSP FTP site is the premier source for Scouting Clipart on the Internet. The site has more than 5000 images, available in three formats -- PCX for PC's, PICT for Mac, and GIFand JPEG for Web pages. The site is divided into sevaral sections:

Images of Member Countries of the World Organization of the Scout Movement
More images on the Pinetree Web --Paintings by Baden-Powell

The Berkeley Troop 24 Web Site
Alan Houser of Troop 24, Berkeley, California, has cataloged a number of Scouting imges in GIF and JPEG formats at http://www.emf.net/~troop24/icons/gif-index.html. There are rank and other insignia images here, most in full color. You can observe all the images in this directory at once, by selecting their page, http://www.emf.net/~troop24/icons/gif-page.html.

Of particular interest here are color images of all the Youth and Adult achievement and training knots, with a single page summary at http://www.emf.net/~troop24/icons/knots/all-knots.gif.

You can also look at their Album, where you can view a whole bunch of photographs of their activities.

Alan also collects virtual patches at http://www.emf.net/~troop24/scouting/patches.html. This collection is far from complete, so please send him contributions -- images or URL's to images.

Graphmaster -- Scouting Graphics and Chat
This is a great site for original color Girl Scout images. There are a number of color Cub Scout and Boy Scout images as well. You can also connect to Worldwide Scouting Chat through this site.

The South African Scouting Clipart Collection
This site provides a variety of South African patch clipart and other color and b/w clipart images.

The SR-3A Order of the Arrow Web Site
This site contains Order of the Arrow clipart. Also, they have the BSADSK set of National clipart for Wintel PC in zipped archive format. Thanks to John Bicket, bicket@ionet.net.

What to do with 'em

What to do with the Macintosh clipart files when you get them

PICT and TIFF images are available as individual files, or in archives, on many sites. If you download an individual file, make sure you do it in 8-bit binary mode.
If you download an archived file -- .sit or .zip -- you will need an application to expand the archive. The very best application to use on your Macintosh to unstuff an archive file is Aladdin Systems freeware application Stuffit Expander, for both .sit and .zip files. Aladdin Systems Stuffit applications can be found at http://www.aladdinsys.com. Check out the shareware section and click on the "Download" link.
Under System 7.x and up, Stuffit Expander is a drag and drop application. This means that if you drag the icon of your saved clipart file over the Stuffit Expander icon, it will gray, indicating that it is selected. Releaseing your mouse button will launch Stuffit Expander and de-binhex the file. Repeat this procedure with the resulting file to unstuff the file. The result will be a folder with all the individual clipart images.
After decoding and unstuffing, the resulting images are either in PICT or TIFF format. In both cases, you should be able to directly import them into word processors, such as Microsoft Word.

What to do with the PC Clipart files when you get them

PCX, BMP and WMF clipart files can be found on many Scouting clipart sites, though you will find mostly PCX (PC Paintbrush) files. Some are available as individual files, some as zipped archives. If you download an individual file, make sure you do it in 8-bit binary mode.
The archive files on most ftp sites are PKZip (.zip) archives of the image collections. Depending on your system, you may or may not have to uudecode the downloaded files when you do the ftp downloads. To unzip these files, WinZip is the archiver of choice. It is free for personal use and is available at almost any ftp site. Registration gets you the added multiple disk compression and auto validation functions.
You can also download a PC version of Stuffit Expander from the Aladdin Systems site. Just as for Mac, this application expands .sit and .zip files underDOS or Windows. Stuffit archives are becoming more popular on PCs.

Interesting Fonts

The following fonts for Windows and Macintosh are available on the US Scouting Service Project site:
The Logger Truetype font (© 1991 by David Rakowski, Alle Rechte Vorhalten) is FREE but a check would be very welcome; made out to Columbia University and sent to Cynthia Lemiesz, 703 Dodge Hall, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027. Such payments are treated as tax-deductible donations to help the sadly underfunded Columbia Composers put on their concerts. If you pass it on to your friends (and please DO) all files in this package must be distributed together, unaltered, including the file you are reading.
The Morse Code Fonts are wonderful. They were made by Michel Bujardet at Match Software, 8205 Santa Monica Blvd 1-205, West Hollywood, CA 90046-5912 (818)784-3737. These fonts are shareware. If you use them, please pay the shareware fee.

The MATCH MORSE - TRUETYPE FONT
The Morse Code Truetype font is intended for ham radio enthusiasts and curious people of all cultures. Great to teach or re-discover that communication. Shareware $20. Upon registration, you will receive 2 more Morse code fonts, and can recieve 50 more fonts, including many other original fonts, or foreign (Japanese Kanas, Russian, Slovak, Armenian, ancient Greek, Hebrew,etc.).

The MATCH MORSE - POSTSCRIPT TYPE 1 FONT
