Chicago started its long, tumultuous life as a Broadway musical in 1975, directed by Bob Fosse, starring Chita Rivera and featuring a score by legendary composers John Kander and Fred Ebb – a certain recipe for a hit, you would think. Instead, Fosse saw his beloved production greeted coolly, as 70s audiences couldn't warm to the show's chilly cynicism and murderous, unsympathetic heroines. (Fosse chronicled his angst in the slightly fictionalized, Oscar-winning movie All That Jazz, which took its title from Chicago's opening number.) Relegated to minor status, Chicago rose to life again in 1996 as a smash hit revival choreographed by and starring Fosse protégé Ann Reinking, who alongside Bebe Neuwirth made "merry murderesses" Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly spring to sinewy, sexy life. Miramax became highly enthusiastic about a film version, even though a Fosse-driven adaptation in the late 80s never came to fruition. Stars came and went (most notably Goldie Hawn and Madonna) as did directors and scripts, all trying to make a stage-bound musical palatable for a film treatment. It wasn't until director Rob Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon hit upon a new spin for the material – setting all Chicago's musical numbers inside the head of its heroine, Roxie – that the movie finally got off the ground. But even with three stars as big as Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, everyone was still wary how a Broadway-style musical would fare with contemporary audiences. Turns out the worry was all for nothing – Chicago was a hit from the get-go, grossing $171 million and dancing off with six Oscars, including Best Picture. - Mark Englehart (more) (Movie of the Day Archive)
