Internships

The American Enterprise is seeking interns to help out at our Washington D.C. office. Interns will help with research, proofreading, our Web site, and office tasks and will have time to work on an article for the magazine or its Web page. Interns also get to attend the many interesting lectures and events at AEI and elsewhere. This is an unpaid internship, although AEI does feed its interns very well. The work environment is great: free gourmet lunch and breakfast, free espresso, muffins and free soda, a loose but-not-too-loose dress code, plenty of gel pens, hours of entertainment from Socrates and Nietzsche stuffed dolls, and really cool co-workers.

Applicants don't necessarily need journalism experience or even a social science background. They should have a vast curiosity about the world, be organized, have good writing ability and, at the very least, not feel antagonistic towards AEI's center-conservative philosophy. Liberal arts majors and students in the hard sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.

It's best to look at the magazine's Web page or a few copies of the magazine before applying.

To apply:

Send a cover letter, a resume, and a writing sample. Class papers make fine writing samples and papers about literature, history, film, and other like topics are just as good as those about political science and government. An elaborate cover letter isn't necessary nor is a transcript. If you wish, you may include the telephone number and e-mail address of two people to serve as references. Written recommendations are not required.

A cover letter should include the dates you are available for an internship and any other pertinent information that is not included in your resume. E-mail attachments in Microsoft Word format are preferred for applications; it is fine to include links for writing samples that are currently online.

We select interns for the summer (June-August), late summer (August-September), fall (September-early December), winter (December-January) and spring (late January-May).

The upcoming deadlines are as follows:

Late Summer 2004: May 2
Fall 2004: July 18
Winter 2004-5: October 20

If you are not selected in our initial round, we will still consider you when we consider all other applicants. All other things being equal, your choices of getting an internship are better if you apply early.

If you are interested in an internship in policy research, conference planning, communications, but not the magazine, please apply through AEI's intern coordinator, Ruth Smith, at ruth@aei.org.

Exact start and end dates are decided on a case-by-case basis. Internships are highly competitive; we receive roughly 20 applications per available spot but we do promise to carefully read every application we receive. Feel free to e-mail us if you don't hear from us within two weeks of the application deadline. Applications should be e-mailed to Karina Rollins at krollins@aei.org. please write INTERNSHIP in call caps in the subject line.

If you have any questions you can call Karina Rollins at (202) 862-5886 or e-mail her at krollins@aei.org.
