Shadow of the Colossus
By: Jestin Jund

While sales would prove differently, Ico for the PS2 is hailed as one of the most innovative and compelling role playing games to grace the system. Hailed for it’s compelling nature, Ico took the idea of storytelling on a game system to a new level. After years without any news, the developers are back and in a big way.

Shadow of the Colossus for the Playstation 2 is once again looking to reshape the way we play games. Although the game itself doesn’t share any ties to Ico, the art direction is much the same. In short, the game is beautiful, and is once again proving that our almost dead Playstation 2 still has a few tricks up its sleeve. Seamlessly the game blends huge environments with monsters of epic proportion while retaining very nice frame rates.

Not much was revealed about the story line of Shadow of the Colossus, but the gameplay more than made up for it’s E3 presence. Much like Ico, you play as a boy on an incredible journey. At your disposal is large horse, and a sword of light, which guides you in your ways. As aforementioned, the environments are huge, and this is where your sword of light comes into play. On your horse, its impossible to know where to go without the help of your sword. You hold the sword up to the sky, and floating cursor gives you an idea of the direction you are supposed to head next.
What is so interesting about Shadow of the Colossus is the fact that there are no enemies other than boss enemies. When you arrive at your destination, you are privy to a number of Prince of Persia style jumps and puzzles in which you move through to get to the boss enemy. To say the bosses are huge is an understatement.

Once you encounter the colossal enemies, the game takes on a whole new shape. Instead of a battle with your enemy, you end up interacting with them. In the level provided, you had run up to him while he was walking and climb his leg. Once on the leg, a radar of sorts lets you know how close you are to his weak spot. Once found, you pierce his leg, and he falls to the ground. In doing so, you are able to continue to climb to the top of the enemy in platformer style, although he is still moving, so things get a little rough.

The preview ends when you pierce him through the head, but if this is what is in store for the rest of the game, we all have something amazing to look forward to. Shadow of the Colossus was one of my main focuses of this show, and I have to say it’s exceeded my expectations. Production is at 60 percent done, so a release date is still a bit iffy. Either way, if production continues to stay at this caliber then we are in for a great experience.
