Next to most stories on a Topix.net news page, you will notice a boxed number (you probably got to this page by clicking on that number). This is the score that NewsRank™ has assigned to this particular story. It is not a score of the article itself, but rather the underlying story that is being reported. The higher the number the more prominent and interesting the story is.

Story Magnitude

The magnitude of the underlying story is derived from a combination of factors, including reporting source, number of articles appearing reporting on the story, how quickly those articles appear and the prominence of the subject matter of the story. Topix.net has a proclivity for hard news (as opposed to commentary) and there is an editorial voice built into our AI used to surface the most interesting stories to our users. Concept Based Categorization

Topix.net's powerful AI categorizes news by concept - not mere keywords - to create its news pages. As a result, stories that have only mere mentions of a specific locality or subject are separated from those stories that are truly about that locality or subject. For instance, a story using the phrase "entrepreneurs aging like fine Bordeaux" won't appear on the Topix.net Wine News page , nor will stories about Cadillac, Michigan show up on auto news pages about Cadillacs.

Geo-Localization

NewsRank™ categorization distills not only what each particular story is about, but also the location of the event being reported and the location of the subjects of the story. In addition, NewsRank™ determines where the article was published, and the relevance of the news source to the community. Armed with a complete knowledge of the physical world, Topix.net's news categorization is far more accurate than news services that can localize only to a Metro area, rather than the true locality of the story.
