IMDb Movie of the Day "Indian summer is like a woman. Ripe, hotly passionate, but fickle, she comes and goes as she pleases so that one is never sure whether she will come at all, nor for how long she will stay." So began Peyton Place, the scorching bestseller by housewife Grace Metalious that rocked the foundations of America and sent everyone scurrying to the bookstore to devour the tale of a small New England town beset by sex and scandal. Explosive, controversial, and compulsively readable, Peyton Place was snatched up by 20th Century Fox for an inevitable film adaptation that smoothed out the rough edges and, sadly, took out most of the naughty parts. Lana Turner, past her days as a nubile sweater girl, held court at center stage as the repressed (but still kinda hot) Constance McKenzie, a single mother whose frigid exterior hides a troublesome secret about the origins of her bookish daughter, Allison (starlet Diane Varsi in her screen debut). It's just one story in a town full of secrets, most of which come out when poor Selena (Hope Lange), the nice girl from the wrong side of the tracks, is accused of murdering her stepfather (ironically, Turner would be involved in the murder trial of her mobster boyfriend Johnny Stompanato just a year later). Gorgeously photographed and skillfully if melodramatically acted (five of the cast members were Oscar-nominated, including Turner), Peyton Place was a monster hit that eventually spawned one of the first movie-to-TV spinoffs, a nighttime soap that starred an up-and-coming Ryan O'Neal and Mia Farrow, among others. - Mark Englehart (more) (Movie of the Day Archive)
