Forthcoming trips

All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.

Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around 5 or 6 o'clock); day trips very early in the morning (6 or 7 o'clock). Longer (vacation) trips generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the first day.

Booking details are given on the email list; this normally involves a sign-up on the Monday morning immediately preceding the trip. You must sign the booking sheet to secure a place (unless you've been exempted by special arrangement), and pick up a trip details handout!

Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or 1:25 000 scale.

Sunday 16 October 2005
Edale in the Peak District of England. The traditional day trip to the Peak District for new members (and old!). Sign up at the Squash; after that, remaining places may be bagged by email.
We've previously visited this area in October 2004 and October 2003. The popular walks include Kinder Scout, the Edale skyline, and various tea-shops & pubs.
Useful maps: Explorer OL1 (The Peak District - Dark Peak area) or Landranger 110 (Sheffield & Huddersfield area).
Weekend 29 & 30 October 2005
Caseg Fraith bunkhouse, near Capel Curig in Snowdonia. There's easy access to all the high peaks of the area including Tryfan/Glyderau, the Carneddau, Moel Siabod, and Snowdon itself. It's a long way from the pub, so worth bringing our own for a cosy social in the bunkhouse.
We've previously visited this area in November 2005 and March 2004.
Appropriate maps are Landranger 115 (Snowdon) and Explorer OL17 (Snowdonia - Snowdon and Conwy Valley areas).
Weekend 12 & 13 November 2005
Howgill Fells. Staying in Catholes Farm Bunkhouse near Sedbergh. These hills are to the South-East of the Lake District and offer lots of opportunity for walks along the high, grassy ridges; parts of the Yorkshire Dales (e.g. Whernside) will also be within reach.
We've previously visited this area in February 2004 and November 2000.
The best map is Explorer OL19 (Howgill Fells); the area falls at the join of 3 Landranger maps: 91 (Appleby-in-Westmorland), 98 (Wensleydale and Upper Wharfedale) and 97 (Kendal and Morecambe).
Weekend 26 & 27 November 2005
Grasmere, in the Lake District. Staying in the Achille Ratti bunkhouse near Dunmail Raise, which is handy for the Langdale Pikes, the Fairfield horseshoe, and the Helvellyn range.
We've previously visited this area in October 2002 and October 2000.
Useful maps: Landranger 90 (Penrith, Keswick & Ambleside) or Explorer OL5 (Lake District - North Eastern area). The other Explorer maps of the Lake District may also be useful.

Regular socials

Lunches
Outside of Full Term, lunches occasionally take place on an informal basis; they are normally arranged in the pub, or by email.
Pub Meets
Pub meets are on Thursday evenings from 9:30pm, in the Castle Inn, on Castle Hill. Upstairs if possible (or outside if it's nice), but occasionally downstairs. All year round (not just term-time). The Castle has an entry in the Cambridge Pub Guide; if you need directions, a map can be obtained from Multimap.

T-shirts

* If you are lacking in the CUHWC T-shirts department, now's your chance to enter the world of haute couture and don a top that's the envy of Parisian catwalks. Ask the Safety & Equipment Officer for a Club T-shirt, bearing the wonderful design of Marion and Rob (with a small logo on the front and a larger design on the back) - and available in a choice of colours!.

These are now in very short supply, only Large ones left, so don't delay if you want one!

We had a surprisingly large trip to the Northern Fells of the Lake District, split between Blake Beck camping barn and a nearby campsite. The Garden Party took place in Newnham College, with punting through the shortest night of the year.

March 2005
A very busy month started when a planned trip to Black Sail youth hostel in Ennerdale was cancelled because the roof blew off the hostel in winter storms; it was replaced by a trip to Kentmere in the south-east of the Lake District. The Annual Dinner was held in St. John's College on the 9th, and on the following weekend, the Club spent a weekend in the Three Peaks region of Yorkshire.

January 2005
As usual, we went to the Lake District early in January, for the annual post New Year trip. We arrived just after torrential rainfall that had brought chaos to the region; thankfully the rain and high winds abated by the end of the trip. The last weekend of the month was a trip to Dinas Mawddwy, south Snowdonia.
