DOW Kills Coyote At Copper Mountain

Wildlife officials killed an aggressive coyote that was roaming a ski resort.

Officials killed the coyote after a man reported the animal charged toward his 13-year-old son during a ski trip Saturday to Copper Mountain. The man says they scared the animal away and nothing happened.

The ski lift and run were closed after Saturday's scare while Division of Wildlife officials hunted for the animal and killed it. The coyote is being tested for diseases.

Wildlife officials say the animal tried to bite a person on the arm in another incident. Read more

Vonn Ties US Downhill Record

“She just has a feel and touch.”

Lindsey Vonn joined Picabo Street and Daron Rahlves as the most successful American downhill skiers. Among current competitors, she has no equal.

Vonn blew away the field Saturday for her fourth win in seven downhills this season. It was the ninth downhill victory of her career, matching the mark of Street and Rahlves.

'Lindsey is pretty much unbeatable now,' U.S. downhill coach Alex Hoedlmoser said. 'The only thing that could have beaten her here was herself.'

Using a much straighter line than any other skier, Vonn covered the 1.84-mile Kandahar Banchetta course in 1 minute, 38.86 seconds. The race announcer yelled, 'She's a speed train!' as Vonn posted one split time faster than another. Read more

Search on for Missing Skiers, Hiker

“If you keep moving and have a positive attitude and know how to construct a snow shelter, you can survive”

Fresh snow added to the pressure on rescuers trying to find two skiers who have been lost near Lake Tahoe through two nights of plunging temperatures.

Patrick Frost, 35, and Christopher Gerwig, 32, both of San Francisco, were reported missing Saturday night at the Alpine Meadows resort just north of Lake Tahoe, said Placer County sheriff's Sgt. Allan Carter.

Frost and Gerwig, described as expert skiers, had last been seen Saturday morning at a resort bar listening to advice about different outlying areas to ski. During the night, the area had temperatures in the 20s, high wind and heavy snow. Read more

Miller Wins Super-Combi Title

Bode Miller clinched his third super-combi World Cup title after rival Jean-Baptiste Grange failed to finish his run in the second leg on Sunday.

Grange's misstep gave Miller the win in the discipline standings before the American finished with a combined time of 2 minutes, 18.45 seconds.

Earlier, Miller won the downhill leg with a significant cushion ahead of the slalom.

Ivica Kostelic of Croatia, trailing by 2.26 seconds in the first leg, regained some lost ground in the slalom to take second place, 0.38 behind Miller. Read more

Storms Hammer West With Heavy Snow

About 20 inches of snow fell around Coeur d'Alene. 'They got clobbered,' John Livingston, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said of residents in that northern city. Read more
