Welcome

Welcome to the CUWS Website. The Wireless society caters for everyone in the University interested in amateur radio, whether or not they hold a transmitting licence. The society maintains a shack, and the callsign G6UW, and also holds occasional speaker meetings of a radio related theme. We have a well equipped shack in a good location for both HF and VHF, with recent attempts to extend this to UHF. We also have two large antenna masts equipped with rotators. This equipment is all available for (licenced) members to use at any time (after being issued with a key against a small deposit). The society has held the club callsign G6UW since 1932. However the society is considerably older than this, and the society's first accounts book starts on the 20th October 1920.

CUWS Radio Exams

The Cambridge University Wireless Society will be offering exam opportunities at Caius College Cambridge as follows (please note that the dates in 2006 are provisional and subject to change or cancellation):

Interested candidates should contact Martin Atherton G3ZAY (g3zay at btinternet.com) as soon as possible to register their interest and discuss arrangements for completing any necessary practical elements.

People wishing to take an exam need to have sent a completed form along with a cheque for the exam fees to Martin a minimum of 3 weeks before the session.

Foundation examinations and associated practical elements will be offered from time to time when there is sufficient demand.

We do not currently plan to offer any formal courses of tuition for these exams - most university candidates will not require these - but it may be possible to offer some individual tuition if necessary.

Please note that the three exams must be completed sequentially and you cannot just take the level of exam that you wish to start at.

Diary Dates for 2005/6

For (potential) New Members

To learn more about Amateur (Ham) Radio, read our short introduction to Amateur Radio. Society Membership is open to Members of the University of Cambridge. The Committee has discretion to admit others with close associations with the university, university staff members, or students at Anglia Ruskin University. If you want to join CUWS, then email any member of the commitee. Membership is just £10/year and we have about 50 members. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.

For existing members

CUWS has a shack for the use of its members. What is available, and how to use it is detailed here. CUWS also holds occasional speaker meetings, details of which will be circulated by email.

QSL Information

CUWS QSL Cards are always available but please do not QSL to G6UW or to M4A, either direct or via the bureau. Under normal circumstances, we cannot receive cards this way! All G6UW transmissions have a nominated QSL Manager: For QSOs since 1 June 2001, QSL via M0BLF (direct or via the bureau). For older QSOs, email M0BLF (m0blf at domsmith.co.uk) with the date of the QSO and we will try to trace the correct manager. We always try to give advance notice of the manager's details to the DX Community through news services such as 425DXN and through regular announcements whilst we are on air. For more information see M0BLF's website.
