Today's IMDb Poll Question Is: Which decade produced the best horror movies? (vote)
Time to Vote in "Pitch Your Picture"We're no longer accepting entries for Honda Civic and IMDb's "Pitch Your Picture" contest but the voting gallery is now open. Vote from 1-10 stars for the poster you like best; the first round is from 10/14-10/28, the finalist round is the week after. The first place winner will receive a ViewSonic N3250w 32 inch wide LCD TV, while second place will get a Nikon CoolPix S1 Digital Camera. Please note: use only your original ideas and your original images for your made-up film (do not lampoon or parody existing films). Do not use existing screen captures, posters, or stills from other films or photos or representations of real-life people; using them will automatically disqualify the entry. Check here for the games rules and regulations, here for our FAQ but most of all, start voting (or submitting) in "Pitch Your Picture!"
IMDb Movie of the Day Portland, Oregon resident Matt McCormick started a screening series called Peripheral Produce in 1996. A couple years later Peripheral Produce morphed into a distributor with its own catalog of experimental film and video compilations, with a roster of filmmakers that includes Sam Green (Oscar-nominated for The Weather Underground) and Miranda July (a consummate artist whose Me and You and Everyone We Know broke out of the film festival circuit in 2005). McCormick is also no slouch behind the camera, as evidenced by From Tugboats to Polar Bears, a compilation of his short films, including The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal, a 15-minute masterpiece that asserts the process of destroying one art form unwittingly creates another. Ms. July narrates, addressing the collaborative process between graffiti writers and the city workers who are paid to roll paint over the works of said writers, resulting in a subliminal type of public art. McCormick juxtaposes paintings by Mark Rothko with images of covered-up graffiti from all over Portland; his slideshow of neutral-colored rectangles compete with Rothko's stunning works. July's playful diction mocks the ways in which art is typically described, though the irony is nearly lost during the presentation of one gorgeous shot after another. McCormick wants to acknowledge something he thinks is beautiful, however he's not above poking fun at his own pretension. It's no wonder that Art Forum and The Village Voice both called the short one of the top 10 films of 2002. - Arno Kazarian (more) (Movie of the Day Archive)
