IMDb Movie of the Day The life of Frida Kahlo took a long and tumultuous journey on its way to the big screen. Numerous actresses wanted to play the Mexican painter, who took the pain and agony of a crippling bus accident and transformed it into amazing, legendary art, while leading a life that broke all boundaries, be they political, sexual or artistic. Jennifer Lopez was interested for a time, as was Madonna, who owns some of Kahlo's artwork. An adaptation with Laura San Giacomo almost came to fruition, but was derailed by protests that the actress wasn't of Mexican descent. Succeeding where others failed, however, was Salma Hayek, who made it a personal mission to get Kahlo's life onscreen. Teaming with director Julie Taymor, who had wowed audiences with her audacious Titus, Hayek produced and starred in Frida alongside Alfred Molina, who played Kahlo's husband and fellow artist Diego Rivera. While it follows the standard Hollywood biopic blueprint -- even beginning with Kahlo near the end of her life, flashing back to her youth -- Frida fills out its conventional structure with unconventional and affecting flourishes. Even though four people worked on the screenplay (five if you count Edward Norton, Hayek's boyfriend at the time, who did an uncredited rewrite), Taymor's vision unites all the elements of Kahlo's life, employing brief bits of animation as well as striking re-imaginings of some of Kahlo's most famous work. A surprising financial success (grossing $26 million, more than double its cost), Frida won two Oscars and nabbed a Best Actress nomination for its leading lady. - Mark Englehart (more) (Movie of the Day Archive)
