LOST FILM, 27 February 2003
Author: eva25at from Vienna, Austria

The negatives of all british films of Ronald Colman have probably been destroyed during the 1941 London Blitz.

Plot synopsis (no spoiler since the film is lost): Colman is not happy in his Cornish fishing village (the film was shot on location), and deserts his loving foster-mother, for the tempting city lights. The daughter of his boss does not reciprocate his feelings and he is fired. Defeated by the life in London he returns home only to discover that his foster-brother has married his early love. But motherly love heals his broken heart...

The film was based on the novel "The toilers of the sea" by Victor Hugo. Critics who expected a serious film about capital & labor complained that the working conditions were not explored more thoroughly.
