The decision was a controversial one, since it was made at the end of the 1970-71 season and did not give Sullivan the opportunity to mount a farewell show after more than 20 years on the air. Sullivan would return for a few specials over the next year, however. The Canadian comedy duo of Wayne & Shuster appeared on the show more often than any other act - nearly 80 appearances. (more)

Quotes:
[introducing the Beatles - 9 February 1964]
Ed: Yesterday and today, our theatre's been jammed with newspapermen and hundreds of photographers from all over the nation. And these veterans agree with me that the city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool who call themselves 'The Beatles.' Now tonight you're going to be twice entertained by them. Right now, and again in the second half of our show. Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.
