IMDb Movie of the Day Adrian Lyne, the master of cinematic gloss, broke through the shiny surface of his previous films with Unfaithful, a seemingly simple story of the repercussions of infidelity based on Claude Chabrol's La Femme Infidèle. Richard Gere and Diane Lane star as a contented upstate New York couple with a well-adjusted son, a dog, and a house that's ready-made for a Pottery Barn catalog. Nothing's really wrong with their marriage... but there's also not a lot to fill in the outlines of family duty they all obligingly cohere to. And when Lane bumps into an impossibly handsome Frenchman (Olivier Martinez, sporting three-day growth and sensual lips made for the art of seduction) on a windy New York day, there's nothing urgent to keep her from entering his SoHo loft, since she would never really do anything... or would she? Lane is at her career best here, careening from ecstasy to agony and back again within seconds as she relives her first tryst with Martinez on the train ride back home. The Oscar-nominated actress easily carries the first part of film, and then Gere the next (after figuring out what she's up to and confronting Martinez), both coming together for the unexpectedly powerful conclusion. If this were a standard thriller, the last half hour would seem anti-climactic, but Lyne mines the drama and heartbreak (and urgency) in Gere and Lane's marriage, as they warily circle each other and see how the consequences of their individual actions have affected the other. - Mark Englehart
