Bee Season [limited]
Director: Scott McGehee David Siegel
Stars: Richard Gere, Juliette Binoche, Flora Cross (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: As Miriam Naumann (Binoche) begins a downward emotional spiral, her husband (Gere) avoids their collapsing marriage by immersing himself in Jewish Mysticism and his daughter's quest to become a spelling bee champion.

THE BUZZ: Director McGehee returns with his follow-up to The Deep End, though this time around someone else is handling the screenplay; Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal -- yes, Maggie and Jake's mom -- adapted the novel by Myla Goldberg. Co-star Minghella -- yes, Max's son -- is proving he's a Fall; he makes his debut as George Clooney's son in Syriana.

Zathura
Director: Jon Favreau
Stars: Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo, Dax Shepard (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: Two young brothers (Hutcherson and Bobo) are drawn into an intergalactic adventure when their house is magically hurtled through space.

THE BUZZ: Hopefully, director Favreau, in his follow-up to Elf is getting a little help in the production design and set decoration departments, because his films, which are always funny, are also consistently ugly as sin. Zathura is based on a story by Chris Van Allsburg (Jumanji) and is being handled by high profile screenwriter David Koepp (Spider-Man), so you know Sony's banking on a big holiday return, which is likely even with stiff competition in the form of Goblet of Fire). We're also expecting the movie will turn Hutcherson into the male Dakota Fanning (just stay away from that scary Brittany Murphy, Josh).

Derailed
Director: Mikael Håfström
Stars: Clive Owen, Jennifer Aniston, Vincent Cassel (Full Cast)
Studio: The Weinstein Company LLC

The Plot: An adulterous couple (Owen and Aniston) blackmailed by a violent criminal look to turn the tables on their aggressor in order to protect themselves and their families.

THE BUZZ: The summer and spring may have belonged to Brad and Angelina, but the fall and winter are all about Jen, who pulls down her first dramatic role (just like Courteney "November" Cox!). We're all waiting for you to turn that best-selling novel out, girl.

Get Rich or Die Tryin' [11/9]
Director: Jim Sheridan
Stars: 50 Cent, Joy Bryant (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: An inner city drug dealer (50 Cent) looks to rap music to save him from a certain death.

THE BUZZ: The people who brought 50 up have all but abandoned the superstar rapper, but it's his new crop of fans -- kids -- who should embrace this true-life dramatization of his origins. And if the 8 Mile formula at work here holds up, director Sheridan (In America) could pull in an older audience and stir up the suburbs.

Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic [limited]
Director: Liam Lynch
Stars: Sarah Silverman (Full Cast)
Studio: Roadside Attractions

The Plot: Narrative digressions on sex, race, politics, and more from comedienne Sarah Silverman.

THE BUZZ: Fantasically off-color comedienne Sarah Silverman, who seems to be criticized for being as beautiful as she is funny, turns her off-Broadway show into a feature, with some help from Bob Odenkirk and Brian Posehn. There's an unofficial trailer here for those who've either been waiting months for the release, or can't recognize the name, but will soon be repeating her jokes.

Chicken Little
Director: Mark Dindal
Stars: Zach Braff, Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: A chick's hyper-active imagination lands him in some pretty hot water with his hometown. To help him overcome his particular setback, the community has him shipped off to Camp Yes-U-Can, where he stumbles upon a secret, evil plan concocted by his counselors.

THE BUZZ: The old, familiar tale gets a gender overhaul, as Braff's the voice behind all those feathers and exaggerations. Director Dindal has assembled a lovely voice cast (including our favorite, Amy Sedaris) in what should be a popular follow-up to his last film, The Emperor's New Groove. Success on any level will come as a relief to Disney, as they rear their first non-Pixar CG baby.

Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: Six months in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait offers a series of dramatic and traumatic experiences for Marine Anthony "Swoff" Swofford (Gyllenhaal) as he fights in Operation: Desert Storm.

Saw II
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
Stars: Donnie Wahlberg, Beverley Mitchell, Franky G (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films Inc.

The Plot: The serial killer known as "Jigsaw" is back, and this time he has eight victims locked up and forced to play deadly games in order to stay alive. Detective Eric Mason (Wahlberg), meanwhile, continues the work of his predecessors as he tries to break-up Jigsaw's game.

THE BUZZ: By now Saw's success story is old hat, and the movie's many fans and detractors are battling out the merits of the sequel online. We know that Amanda (Shawnee Smith) is back, and apparently she needs to learn another lesson. But we're also hearing that Beverley Mitchell, a.k.a the middle sister on 7th Heaven is the real scream queen here.

The Legend of Zorro
Director: Martin Campbell
Stars: Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rufus Sewell (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: Despite trying to keep his swashbuckling to a minimum, a threat to California's pending statehood causes the adventure-loving Alejandro de la Vega (Banderas) -- and his wife, Elena (Zeta-Jones) -- to take action.

THE BUZZ: 6 out of 10 stars: I always used to say that The Mask of Zorro was the best Steven Spielberg movie not actually directed by Steven Spielberg. ...more

Prime
Director: Ben Younger
Stars: Uma Thurman, Meryl Streep, Bryan Greenberg (Full Cast)
Studio: Focus Features

The Plot: A career driven professional from the Upper East Side (Uma Thurman) is wooed by a young painter from Brooklyn (Greenberg), who also happens to be the son of her psychoanalyst (Meryl Streep).

THE BUZZ: For his first major role, Greenberg slides up next to Thurman and Streep -- no performance anxiety there. Sandra Bullock was originally set to star, but rumor has it she wasn't satisfied with the script, and then it was all presto-changeo Uma. We smell Golden Globes and Independent Spirit Awards.

Director: John Gatins
Stars: Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Oded Fehr (Full Cast)
Studio: DreamWorks Distribution LLC

The Plot: A trainer (Russell) and his daughter (Fanning) nurse an injured horse back to health, with an eye on racing her in the Breeders' Cup.

THE BUZZ: 8 out of 10 stars: If there was a movie I absolutely did not want to see this year, it was Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. So of course I loved about every minute of it. ...more

Good Night, and Good Luck.
Director: George Clooney
Stars: David Strathairn, George Clooney, Patricia Clarkson (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros.

The Plot: Broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow (Strathairn) looks to bring down Senator Joseph McCarthy.

THE BUZZ: George Clooney's second film wades out a bit further after a stellar opening last week ($420,000 on only 11 screens). For longtime fans of Strathairn, it's wonderful to see and hear the Oscar buzz his performance is generating.

The Weather Man
Director: Gore Verbinski
Stars: Nicolas Cage, Hope Davis, Nicholas Hoult (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: A Chicago weather man (Cage), separated from his wife and children, must decide whether personal and professional successes are mutually exclusive.

THE BUZZ: 5 out of 10 stars: Whereas American Beauty attempted to be about the quiet desperation of the American bourgeois, The Weather Man is about the grim dissatisfaction of the entertainment professional. ...more

Shopgirl
Director: Anand Tucker
Stars: Steve Martin, Claire Danes, Jason Schwartzman (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: When Mirabelle (Danes) is seduced Ray Porter (Martin), a wealthy and caring older man, her life takes a much-needed turn for the better. But in time, she must make a choice between Ray and Jeremy (Schwartzman), a struggling musician closer to her age ... but maybe not to her heart.

THE BUZZ: Kinda stoked for the feature version of Martin's perfectly simple novella, which became a major best-seller. Jimmy Fallon was originally set to star as Jeremy, and we were relieved when Schwartzman got the role. None of this explains how director Tucker (Hilary and Jackie) got the job, however.

Flightplan
Director: Robert Schwentke
Stars: Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard, Sean Bean (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: Emotionally devastated by the sudden death of her husband, Kyle Pratt (Foster) embarks on a non-stop flight from Berlin to New York with her young daughter. Halfway through the flight, the girl disappears without a trace -- and no one on the flight remembers ever seeing her on the plane. Is Kyle crazy, or is there a plot lurking? Luckily, she helped design the jumbo jet, so she knows all the nooks and crannies.

THE BUZZ: 7 out of 10 stars: Ever since The Silence of the Lambs, Jodie Foster hasn't so much acted in movies as she has granted permission for her presence to inhabit a number of star vehicles. ...more
