IMDb Recommends...

The Blair Witch Project provoked strong, and varied, reactions from its audiences. Perhaps because of the sureness of its supporters AND detractors, it created a sensation, appearing on numerous magazine covers and becoming wildly profitable. The movie was purportedly composed of the recovered footage of three student filmmakers who had disappeared into the Maryland woods a year earlier. They were making a documentary about a local legend, the Blair Witch, and were never seen again. The documentary's director, Heather Donahue, continues to film in the midst of the most terrifying of circumstances, attempting to keep a photo-journalist's detachment from the events around her, right up to the last frame. It's this device that ensures that The Blair Witch Project will survive, not only as a great horror film, but also as an organic criticism of a generation raised on television, a generation that seems to only experience reality through a lens piece, screen, or tube. That buried statement is the true legacy of this exceptional movie. (-more)
