In Theaters - Ushpizin
Continuing this week in limited release this week is Ushpizin, director Gidi Dar and writer/actor Shuli Rand's fable of faith, tests of character, and the presence of miracles. Set in Jerusalem during the holiday Sukkot, the film centers on Moshe (Rand) and Malli (Michal Bat-Sheva Rand, who is Shuli Rand's real life wife), an Orthodox couple who are so poor that they haven't the money needed to put together a succah, or the temporary shelter, the central item used to symbolize the Exodus from Egypt. They also lack the funds to buy the celebratory greenery myrtle, date-palm branches, willow and most importantly to the couple, citron, the leaves of which are symbolically necessary because they want to be blessed with a male child. Married almost five years and still without children, Moshe and Malli decide to use $1000 given to them by a charity to purchase the best possible citron, in hopes of finally realizing their dream of children. Their hopes and wishes are tested, however, when Eliyahu Scorpio (Shaul Mizrahi) and Yossef (Ilan Ganani), two less-than-holy associates from Moshe's past, appear in time to pass the holiday with the couple. Will Moshe and Malli finally reject the disruptive Eliyahu and Yossef, or are the old friends really a blessing in disguise to be embraced?
