How can a number be illegal? When movies are stored on
DVDs (Digital Versatile Disks), they are protected by
CSS, Content Scramble System, a proprietary code
licensed to DVD player manufacturers. Code to crack
this encryption exists; the Motion Picture Association of
America recently sued to stop its distribution under the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If we can express this
computer code as a series of 1s and 0s, equivalently a
number, is distribution of this number therefore illegal?
