The New Yorker Near You
Posted 2005-11-21

Each week, newyorker.com posts a list of readings, author and artist appearances, and other magazine-related happenings. This week’s calendar includes information about the “Art and Artists: New Yorker Cartoons from the Melvin R. Seiden Collection” exhibit at the Bruce Museum, an exhibition of Mary Ellen Mark’s photography, and an exhibition of Ben Katchor’s picture-stories. Also listed is the date for an appearance by Margaret Atwood.

Art and Artists: New Yorker Cartoons from the Melvin R. Seiden Collection
The exhibition features fifty original drawings for cartoons dealing with art and artists, taken from the pages of The New Yorker. The works, some in color, are on loan from Melvin R. Seiden, who has assembled one of the most extensive private collections of New Yorker cartoons in the world. Included in the show is a selection of portraits of the artists by photographer Anne Hall. The exhibition is supported by the Charles M. and Deborah Royce Exhibition Fund.

New Yorker art cartoons deal with many aspects of the art world, from art collecting to art forgery, while satirizing aspects of painting, architecture, and museums. Some of these images play on the classic subject of the artist and his model, while others attest to an increasingly sophisticated and satirical view of the sanctity and pretense of high art. Still others taunt the world of museums and galleries, artists on the dole, or the subject of art and commerce.

The exhibition is accompanied by a four-color catalogue, which includes essays by Bruce Museum Executive Director Peter Sutton and Bruce Museum Senior Curator of Art Nancy Hall-Duncan, as well as photographs of many of the artists.

Mary Ellen Mark
Marianne Boesky Gallery and Yancey Richardson Gallery present a joint exhibition of Mary Ellen Mark’s legendary “Falkland Road” project, on view in its entirety for the first time since 1981. This exhibition will include eleven previously unseen images. Mark’s intimate and shocking photographs of the brothels of Falkland Road, Bombay, form a fascinating portrait of an exotic and hermetic world. Photographed in 1978 and 1979, this extraordinary project was exhibited only once in the United States, at Castelli Graphics. The current exhibition is presented in conjunction with the release of “Falkland Road: Prostitutes of Bombay” (Steidl).
