Product Description:

PopChar is a utility application that lets you insert special characters, accented and foreign letters, etc., into your documents. No need to search for and remember keyboard combinations. Just pop up the PopChar window, click the desired character, and the character appears in your current document.

If a font contains Unicode characters, you can see all of them, neatly arranged in the standard Unicode categories.

You can use the character table of PopChar X like a menu or make it "sticky" to insert multiple characters in a row. PopChar X also allows you to select the font and size of the characters to be inserted.

  • simple to use: click and select
  • displays the keystrokes needed to create selected characters
  • selectable font
  • remembers and hilites the most recently selected characters
  • Unicode support
  • inserts HTML symbols
  • automatically detects the current font in many popular applications (including Word, Excel, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, InDesign, FileMaker and BBEdit)
  • manual font selection (in applications where PopChar X cannot determine the current font
  • exclude common characters (letters, digits and accents)
  • "styled" and "unstyled" character insertion
  • resizeable window (up to the full screen)
  • "sticky mode" lets you insert multiple characters with a series of clicks
  • automatically starts at login
  • also works with Classic applications

If you purchased your license within the last two years, the upgrade is free for you, and your current license key will work for the new version. If your 2 years update period has expired, you can purchase a 2 years update renewal. Whereas other software vendors offer upgrades at a reduced price for just a single new version, our licenses cover ALL subsequent releases of PopChar X and PopChar Pro within two years, starting with the date of purchase.

What's new in this version:

  • The "P" box can now be hidden from the menu bar; it automatically appears when the mouse pointer enters the menu bar.
  • Preference setting for the number of recent fonts to be shown in the font menu.
  • Preference setting for the number of recently selected characters to highlight.
  • It is now possible to close the PopChar window immediately after selecting a character or to keep it open until the "P" box is clicked again.
  • Improved compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4 ("Tiger").
  • The PopChar X window now closes faster when the mouse pointer moves out of the window.
  • Dialog windows now appear in more adequate locations.
  • Clicking a disabled character in demo mode now displays an explanation.
  • Fixed a scrolling problem with Apple's Mighty Mouse.
  • Fixed a problem with automatic font detection under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

PopChar X ReviewConsider CharView instead! - Version: 2.3, 11/30/2005 01:24AM PST

I'm also very angry about Macility's upgrade policy.

Just now I'm evaluating CharView, which seems a very good alternative to PopChar for me. You can place the icon to the right side of the menu bar, you can even make it invisible. And it costs only 15 $ and seems to have been updated regularily.

You haven't upgraded PopChar for over two years, zero bug fixes, zero improvements, and stuck to your guns about the god-awful ugly freakin' 'P' that you refuse to put in the darn MENU EXTRAS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.... Now you want to charge us loyal folks, (since before you took over and ruined things) for a maintenance update??? I hope you finally go out of business and Apple's char palette buries you!

PopChar X ReviewThink before "up"grading! - Version: 2.3, 11/29/2005 11:37AM PST

Even reading the included Read Me file first didn't prepare me for the surprise I received after "up"grading - my license key bought 25 months ago was no longer valid and I would have to pay $20 for an upgrade - a whopping 65% of the full price!

I think that it would have been good policy to remind the user of this (poor) pricing policy either in the Read Me or during the installation process instead of leaving long-time paying customers out in the cold with a non functional version!

Looking again through the ChangeLog I decided that I am not willing to pay them for a few bug fixes (which took them way too long to implement in the first place - how ling has OS X 10.4 been out now??) and went to download 2.2.1 again - works just fine for me.

Another very disappointed (probably former) customer
