Product Description:

Audacity is a free audio editor. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects.

What's new in this version:

  • Audacity can import and display MIDI files, but they cannot be played or edited.
  • MacOS X: Audacity cannot work with files or folders that are contained inside folders with international characters (accent marks, etc.) in their names. Note that files with accented characters work, and Audacity projects with accented characters work. Only files inside of folders with accented characters in their names will cause problems.
  • Mac OS X: Fixed a major bug that caused Audacity to crash at seemingly-random times on Mac systems, especially during playback or recording.
  • The Change Pitch and Change Tempo effects have been upgraded to use a new version of the SoundTouch library by Olli Parviainen, with better speed and higher quality.
  • libsndfile has been upgraded to version 1.0.11. Audacity can now import Sound Designer II (SDII) files.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the program to run slowly when using the Envelope tool.
  • Shift-clicking on a mute or solo button now un-mutes (or un-solos) all other tracks.
  • Nyquist plug-ins can now accept strings as input. Also, a "Debug" button has been added to Nyquist effect dialogs, which allows you to see all of the output produced by Nyquist, for aid in debugging.
  • When the audio file referenced ("aliased") by an Audacity project is missing, Audacity will now always play silence. Before, Audacity would sometimes repeat the most recent audio that was played previously.
  • VU Meters will now always reset when audio I/O has stopped.
  • New or updated translations: Italian (it), Hungarian (hu), Ukrainian (uk), Spanish (es). Polish (pl), Simplified Chinese (zh), Norsk-Bokmal (nb), French (fr), Russian (ru).

Product Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.1.3 or higher

Audacity X CommentaryOne thing... - Version: 1.2.3, 11/28/2005 03:48PM PST

Dead Nancy
I've used Audacity on and off for a couple years. Overall a great product, but with one problem: it still uses the 32-character limit for file names. If you're using the app for existing files with long names, be prepared for some cut-and-paste.

I just hit this preparing some files to be delivered for mastering. I can't expect any metadata outside the file name to survive, and was hitting that #9X60F crap with just band name, track number and song title.

I've rated this app high, but this one issue can be aggravating.

Audacity X Usage TipPlacement of LameLib crucial for functionality - Version: 1.2.3, 10/1/2005 07:14AM PST

I've been finding MP3 export impossible with Audacity ("Export Library cannot be used!"). I downloaded the appropriate LameLib several times to no avail. However what I've discovered is that (at least in Tiger) LameLib must be placed higher up the file hierarchy than I assumed (I had been putting it in the folder with Audacity). Placing LameLib loose in the main Applications folder has solved the MP3 export problems.

Audacity X ReviewLove it. Lookin for Months for a App like that! - Version: 1.2.3, 9/18/2005 06:54AM PST

Its like the good old Sound Edit on OS9. You can pitch the songs, change the tempo and speed without pitch effect, Fade in Fade Out, Amplify and many more....

Ok its not very fast, but hey: Its Freeware!!!
