MPlayer OS X ReviewBetter off running it from the command line - Version: 2.0b8r5, 11/19/2005 05:18PM PST

MPlayer is a fantastic player -- it's just that the Aqua GUI is lackluster and rather buggy. But running it from a terminal (using the mplayer executable hidden away inside the MPlayer OS X bundle) provides a clean, stable, and well-performing media player.

If you're willing to launch your movie playing application from a terminal, MPlayer is the way to go. If you need a file selector and buttons (not just keyboard shortcuts) for your player, VLC is probably a better choice.

MPlayer OS X ReviewNot as versatile as - Version: 2.0b8r5, 11/19/2005 02:59PM PST

VLC. VLC can play almost anything. Mplayer, in my experience, can't. Worse, Mplayer often freezes when asked to play a movie it can't play, maqking a forced quit necessary. That said, there have been a few times where it's made a good backup, and when it works, it works well
