Made sure I had a good backup, repaired permissions, applied update, reboot, repaired permissions again. Perfect.

Apple Security Update ReviewInstalled without issue on pb867 - Version: 2005-009, 11/30/2005 01:09PM PST

afterhours
If folks are not already in the long habit of doing so, they will find life easier by adopting the following technique:

before installing:

turn off fast user switching (and log out of other accounts)
quit out of all running applications
empty trash
use disk utility to repair permissions on boot drive
plug laptop in AC power, deactivate energy saver (turn off spin down drive and system sleep set to NEVER)
have a minimum of several Gb free hard drive space
now -- run the software updater to apply a new OS patch.

Allow plenty of time on reboot -- sometimes it takes a dozen or more minutes to go from grey screen with spinner to the normal login or desktop -- be patient particularly with older equipment.

This update applied just fine on a PB867, an iMac 800 MHz, and an iBook G3/466 clamshell. We use Firefox, so haven't noted the Safari slowdown but quick tests don't seem to show any noticable speed problem with Apple's website or VT.
