Product Description:

Have you ever tried to find something in your browser history or bookmarks, but couldn't quite remember when or where you saw it? Or perhaps you've got your bookmarks meticulously organized, but it takes forever to mouse through the menus to get to something you want? HistoryHound will chase down the page for you - fast!

HistoryHound lets you do a fast text search on the contents of all web pages you've visited recently, plus all the pages you've bookmarked. It's a "personal web search." Instead of hunting through endless lists of obscure URLs and page titles, just type in a few words that appear anywhere on the page. HistoryHound will give you a list of matches, ranked by relevance.

HistoryHound currently supports Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Camino, Mozilla / Netscape, OmniWeb, Opera, Shiira, NetNewsWire 2, PulpFiction and URL Manager Pro.

What's new in this version:

  • HistoryHound can now search for keywords in RSS feeds that you've visited or bookmarked in Safari.
  • A number of problems have been fixed that caused HistoryHound to fail or crash when downloading particular URLs.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause HH to crash at launch time when its preferences were being updated.
  • The search result list is now cleared when a new search is started, rather than waiting for the new search to complete.

Product Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
  • Tiger Compatible

HistoryHound ReviewLet's say your searching for that web page... - Version: 1.8, 9/18/2005 06:04AM PST

you looked at a month ago with that article on Halliburton. Where the heck was it? Type Halliburton into HistoryHound and viola!-there it is! Or maybe it was Halliburton's stock chart. You type Halliburton and chart and there is the page with the chart. For anyone who needs to go back and find something they looked at a week, a month, a year ago, this is THE program you need. Words, partial words, Boolean searches-it's all here, in an easy to use interface. The developer has given us a 30 day trial period, so if you don't use it in 30 days, you may not need it, but its a free way to find out.
Hint: set the preference so that HistoryHound starts up when you log in, set your Account System Preferences so that it is hidden and HistoryHound runs in the background, silently logging your browser activity until you need it. This is a great program--essential in the web age.

The developer contacted me directly via iChat and worked it all out. Despite delays caused by being at WWDC, he did respond. For some reason his emails were not getting through. (That's being investigated. :-/

The NNW issue is due to the fact that HH ony indexes NNW stories that are veiwed in the NW builtin browser.

Now that the support issue is resolved, I'll go back to highly recommending this app. I keep it running all the time and find it very useful, and, we now know, supported.

HistoryHound Commentarysupport is non-existent - Version: 1.8, 6/14/2005 07:30AM PST

I noticed that one can select to index the history and cache for many popular browsers in the preferences. However, the search options only offer the option to actually search Safari files. I've sent email to their support email, and used their web based form to ask how to search the rest. St. Clair Software refuses to reply or even acknowledge any request for support. I might expect such arrogance from a freeware author, but I paid these folks. They shouldn't lead folks to believe they suppor their product if they actually don't.
