Information Related to Version:

Product Description:

Vienna is a simple open source RSS/Atom newsreader for the Mac OSX. It has been designed to provide simple newsreading capabilities for non-technical users while still aiming to be as feature rich as commercial newsreaders. The product is under active development with new builds being planned at least once every week until 1.0 is completed. The source code for Vienna is freely available and instructions are given on the product web site for enlisting and building a copy of Vienna on your own machine.

What's new in this version:

  • Improvements to universal date parsing to fix some mis-parsed article dates.
  • Fixed OPML format in exported subscriptions to conform to the standard.
  • A warning icon now appears next to the folder name in the folders list if an error occurred when the feed was last refreshed.
  • Removed special handling of the folder column in the articles list view. The column now respects the user settings in all folder types.

Product Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later

I was using NNW Lite, and was very very happy. But I needed a larger font size for reading. I tried NNW, which I would have paid for, and may still do (just delayed), if not for Vienna.

I consider the NNW family to be 5-star applications. Vienna is a really good alternative. There are some persisting idiosyncrasies some of which I can live with or work around. Some, I am just tolerating. Hopefully will be corrected later. An e.g.: the feedlist is sorted alphabetically; and the Mark Current Article Read option works strangely.

On the other hand, the feature-set is quite complete, and wide. Surprisingly, it even has AppleScript support too. BTW, my NNW feeds imported to Vienna without much hassle.

Overall, a really functional application which I can see myself continuing to use.

There aren't many reasons to pay for a newsreader when Vienna is available -- clean interface, solid performance, and still evolving.
