A. The Cohen-O'Conner 1926 match continuation: and, as Marion Tinsley once told me, he hoped for this in his 1952 match v. Newell Banks. Instead, Banks cut off with 11-16, 20-11, 8-15 as in Var-1, also reached C.R. from 11-15, 23-18, 9-14, 18-11, 8-15, 22-8, 14-23, 27-11, 7-16, 25-22, 4-8, 26-23, 16-20, 24-19, 8-11, 30-26, 2-7, 22-18, 5-9, 32-27, 913, as in "BC" p-40 Var-1.

Black to play and draw

B. The J. Ballantine attack as played by O'Conner, also in KE. If 23-19 1st, 7-10, 27-23, then the F. Dunne variation with 10-14 draws, to avoid 11-15.

C. Certainly the natural reply, which White hopes for. Instead Ballantine gave the unobbvious 12-16!, then 23-18, (or 22-18 to draw, but not 24-19? To a BW)

D. Also reached from 11-15, 24-20, 8-11, 28-24, 3-8, 23-19, 9-14, 22-17, 5-9, 17-13, 1-5, 26-23, 15-18, 31-26, 14-17?, 21-14, 10-17, 25-22, 18-25, 29-22, 7-10, 32-28, 11-15 same.

E. As diagramed in Gold on the front cover in " Fraser's Lassie IDP", 1887. If 8-11, 23-18, 4-8, 18-14, 2-7, 26-23, 17-26, 30-25, 10-17, 19-1, 17-21, 25-22, 21-25, 22-18, 7-10, 23-19, 10-14, 18-9, 5-14, 1-6, 27-31, 6-10, 14-17, 13-9, 25-30, 10-7 etc. to a WW-E. Lowder-Don Lafferty 1969 Lakeside ty.

F. This elegant reply was given by Ryan with no comment; crediting N.W. Banks. It varies from the easier 24-20, exchange in the Cohen-O'Conner game, also in M.P.

G. Natural enough, but considered a loss by Ryan, who starred the early 4-8, then 24-20x, 8-11*, 22-18, 14-17, 18-14, 21-25, 14-9, 17-22*, 26-17, and 11-15 etc. to draw.

H. Best. On the delayed 4-8, White has: 22-18, 14-17, 18-15*, 25-30, 16-11 etc.10-14, 26-22*, 17-26, and 19-16 etc. to a WW-CCS P-65-G.

Black to play-What result?

I. Marion Tinsley was showing me this line in our Detroit Hotel Room, back in 1952, and here, instead of 11-15, which he did not mention, he went 13-9, 31-27, 9-6, 27-18, and 11-15, 18-11, 16-7 with a white king majority.

(ED.) Is this the same as the famed "Skullcracker" ending-P-36 top in "BC"? Black does have the move(??)

Since the hour was late, this was abandoned. This is in Chinook's database, and we would appreciate their verdict.

Black to play what result?

J. To an easy WW in CCS P-64-E. Don Lafferty mentioned to me that he and Walter Hellman had been over this many years ago, and that Walter suggested 7-2* here as a possible draw, but inconclusive.

I looked at 9-5 in reply (or 15-11, 12-16, 9-5, and 2-6 similar: and if 15-10, 4-8, 9-5, 8-11, 23-18, 31-27, 10-7, 2-6, 7-3, 6-10, 3-8, 10-15, 18-14, 27-24, 8-4, and 15-19 to draw) then 2-6*, (not 4-8, 5-1, 2-7, 1-5, 7-11, 15-10, 11-15, 5-1 etc. WW) 15-11, 12-16, 5-1, 6-2, 1-5, 2-6, 11-7, 6-10, 20-11, 10-3, 5-9, 3-8, 11-7, and 8-12 to draw, as the move is wrong for Johnson's.

VAR-1. 11-16-K, 20-11, 8-15, 24-20-L.

K. As in Banks-Tinsley game, also C.R. from 11-15, 23-18, 9-14, 18-11 etc. as in Lafferty-Chinook 1995 match-Petal.

L. Then 14-18x, and 6-9 to draw. Instead, Chinook varied with 23-18 to draw.
