Lol! Anyway, the game got a score of 8.8 on Gamespot. I am still trying to decide if I'm sick of WW2 shooters yet.

That's just eery. I have both of those games and haven't ever played through all of X-Wing Alliance, and have never even installed Crimson Skies. What's even more surreal is that I even just recently catalogued my game library to see what titles I have yet to play, and those two were number one and two. Are you psychic? Do you have ESPN?

Let's all join the "bought X-Wing Alliance and Crimson Skies but haven't bothered playing it yet" club!

The demo ran smoothly for me on the highest settings with all effects turned on (athlon64 3200, radeon x800xl, 1gb ram). Graphics look stunning as well.
Really? My processor isn't as good as your's but I have the same graphics card and RAM and it not only didn't look good, but ran terribly too. That's weird...maybe I'll try the demo again at some point. Got a lot of stuff to beat before investing in this anyway. What Cats are you running?

Ray Marden - I do have to wonder WTF Valve is doing right now; the whole "takin a long time" thing really is not so funny anymore and DoD:S, even though I love it, is hardly a complete product right now.
Valve has been working on Half Life 2 for XBox (which just went gold today, we should see Blue adding it to the news page soon enough).

DoD Source they were working on completing in time for the Electronic Arts retail packages, so that put the CSS updates and Lost Coast on hold for awhile.

Aside from Valve having played with 3 or 4 different ways of doing HDR, I think the developer commentary has taken them awhile to implement, as it wasn't originally planned for Lost Coast.

They were also working on the Steam 3 update, to get it out in time for the first 3rd party release (Rag Doll).

Now all that is left of current projects is Aftermath, which I'm sure got put on hold (or had a limited focus) due to everything else. There was an interview back in August at 1up.com, where the guys at Valve were saying how much time they had been spending working on Alex's AI and had taken alot longer than they planned. And once they were done with her AI, they had to revisit all the other AI in the game because they had made so many improvements.

So now we can expect some updates to CSS and DoD Source in the semi near future. Beyond that, only Valve knows what they have planned.

UPDATE: Just found this http://modhq.notepadhax.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1130213250&archive=&start_from=&ucat=3&;

They have been working on adding HDR to the CSS maps as well..woohoo!

The money? Money, I have, but what about the time to play them all? I'm still working my way through F.E.A.R. (and loving it) but I also want to play Q4, CivIV and CoD2. I just don't see how I'm going to be able to play them all.
Well, just send them to me and I'll tell you how much you would have enjoyed them.

34. Time to play... Oct 25, 17:53 G-Man

Don't buy all the games right now... wait till Jan, Feb and March (if not longer) when no games come out at all and you'll be able to pick up a few of these in the discount bin (or same price but with the expansion).

.
33. Re: No subject Oct 25, 17:49 G-Man

I was thoroughly surprised by how well the game ran on my system. I've managed to play all games on my PC with relatively high detail, but some choppiness. CoD ran smooth as silk with almost everything maxed....

jayeffaar,

Haha...must be some kind of syndrome, since I seem to have it too!

I also own X-Wing Alliance and Crimson Skies - bought them because of their pedigree and favorable reviews. But I've never gotten around to playing them, because some other game was sucking up all of my gaming time. (Most likely some FPS, hence my handle...)

Over the years, I've probably purchased 30+ games in similar fashion. Needless to say, I've tried to kick such a habit, which my wallet thanks me for. As much as I want to check out CoD2, I think I'll wait until I'm done w/F.E.A.R.

Perhaps one of these days I'll get around to all of those oldies but goodies...

"Though I'm sure the difficulty will get much tougher as you advance, just like it did in the original CoD, where several levels became impossible to complete without going through a dozen or more replays."

I found the original game to be pretty easy, actually.

You should see my collection of games I bought but never found the time to play. One of these days, I'm going to play X-Wing Alliance and Crimson Skies, I swear... At least, they should run pretty smoothly on my current rig, if nothing else...

Damn, where do you guys find the money for all these games? I just bought both F.E.A.R. and Quake 4 so I'm done for at least a while.

I'm looking forward to playing the full game.

I played the demo on hardest difficulty, which wasn't very hard at all. Though I'm sure the difficulty will get much tougher as you advance, just like it did in the original CoD, where several levels became impossible to complete without going through a dozen or more replays.

I don't mind the difficulty, but hopefully things won't be so scripted this time. For example, it would be nice to have enemies spawn in a different/random location on your next replay/reload, or at least have an option to play the game that way. It would go a long way towards getting away from the heavily scripted/deja vu feel of the original.

25. Lost Coast (was Re: Yawn) Oct 25, 13:47 Ray Marden

Pfftt - it will be out.

Having said that, not sure what the point is. It is free - that is cool - but other games or tech demos have it and, even if you look solely at Half-Life 2 or Steam type stuff, Day of Defeat: Source already has a decent implementation.

I do have to wonder WTF Valve is doing right now; the whole "takin a long time" thing really is not so funny anymore and DoD:S, even though I love it, is hardly a complete product right now.

Basically, I just hope they are really kicking ass on a lot of crazy things (expansions to HL3 to TF2 to new IPs,) else Valve is having issues on either the technology or management front.

Oh well, it is free.
That is the best thing I can say about it.
Thinking HDR is nice......for the next generation,
Ray
