Battlefield 2/Special Forces Patch, Linux Server [November 22, 2005, 1:41 pm ET] - Viewing Comments
A new patch is now available for battlefield 2, updating DICE's multiplayer
shooter sequel and its new Special Forces expansion to version 1.12. Since the
patch applies to both the original game and the add-on, word is: "If you have
installed the 1.12 patch to core Battlefield 2 and then installed Battlefield 2:
Special Forces, you will need to re-apply the 1.12 patch again to be able to
play on 1.12 Servers." Additionally, the new version 1.12 Linux dedicated server
is now available. The patch can be found on the
Battlefield 2 Website, and mirrored on

"I found solution that worked for me (with 1.3GB free space on system
drive Wink ).
It is advised that you create backup of system registry before proceeding.
Run regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion
Do not expand CurrentVersion node, just highlight it.
Find ProgramFilesDir variable in the window on the right side of the screen.
It will point to your program files directory (usually "C:\Program Files").
Change that path to folder on a drive that has enough space to patch
BF2. Close regedit (this will save changes) and run the patch. After the
patching is finished open regedit again and restore the previous value
to the ProgramFilesDir (don't forget to do it - your system may become
unstable if you won't).
This worked for me. I hope it will help at least some of you too."

I had the same problem...How many thousands of employees does EA have and they can't even put out a proper installer? Anyway, thanks Ant for the solution.

Did anyone else get this diag.exe file installed from the patch? Look in your updated BF2 folder/directory. View its files properties:
SafeDisc SRV Tool APP
Macrovision Corporation, Macrovision Europe Limited, and Macrovision Japan and Asia K.K.

I think I got the patching trick! |

I only had 1 GB free on my Windows system drive (C. I could not increase the disk space any more even after setting %temp% and swap file to another drive. The patch required 3 GB/3,000 MB. I found a way to upgrade BF2 (don't have Special Forces expansion) with the instructions from http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=21245&sid=26cc7cbfec04b9e5c604728070eb41d0 steps. ... Here is what I did (based from my memory) after trying it:
1. Clear your temporary folder/directory (%temp%; mine is g:\temp\) as much as you can to keep it clean and simple. Don't want to get confused with other stuff.
2. Download and run the big bf2_v1_12update.exe file. This will extract its compressed data to your Windows' temporary folder (%temp like my g:\temp\. When you get the lack of disk space error, then do NOT continue.
3. Go to %temp% and look for something like: G:\temp\bye2E.tmp\Disk1\ that shows:
C:\>dir G:\temp\bye2E.tmp\Disk1\ /s /o:n
Volume in drive G is foolbar7
Directory of G:\temp\bye2E.tmp\Disk1\

Copy G:\temp\bye2E.tmp\Disk1\ to another location. Once that is done, then continue on the failed upgrade. We don't need EA's patch extractor anymore.
4. Go back to %temp% (g:\temp\) and go to G:\temp\{E882D684-E075-43F2-A93F-696E6CAF062D}\{F317E784-F31C-4F26-A610-2D7BD89FEC5F} or something similar. You should see something like:

Copy patch.exe and patchw32.dll (patcher core program files) and copy them to BF2 folder/directory (I:\winstuff\BF2\).
5. Go to you the copied folder/directory and go to \Disk1\bf2\ (for me, E:\dl\Disk1\bf2\). Copy patch.rtd and patch.rtp to BF2 folder/directory (I:\winstuff\BF2\).
6. Run setup.exe (InstallShield Wizard) in the copied folder (E:\dl\Disk1\), pick language (English for me), and don't continue at the lack of disk space error.
7. Open a Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and go to that location (I:\winstuff\BF2\). Run patch.exe and it should patch for a few minutes with a bunch of debugging information. The ending result should be a success like this:

9. You're done! Hopefully, the game is patched correctly. It should be upgraded. I assume this trick works for Expansion part too. Don't forget to delete the files and folders/directories you copied and extracted.
Now, I have a new problem. The game crashes back to desktop after it is launched. I wished I could read these dmp files I see in C:\Documents and Settings\JohnDoe\My Documents\Battlefield 2\dmp\ ... Is there a tool to read them?

My %temp% is not on C: drive. Same for pagefile.sys. I just need a way to tell the patch not to dump in C: drive. I can't believe EA/DICE still haven't fixed this.
This would be considered a bad usabilty design (I am a Sr. SQA Analyst/Tester).

I am assuming that you need to have 3GB of space on your C: drive because the installer is extracting the files to the windows default temp directory. If you have set up a small partition on your C drive (like myself) I suggest you change your default windows Temp directory. This is easily done by following the instructions below...
Right Click -> My Computer -> Properties-> Advanced-> Environmental Variables
Change the User Variables and the System variables for TEMP and TMP to a new Temp directory on another partition.
It's that easy...
I don't play video games... I play murder simulators.

All you have to do is hit the 'update server list' twice for it to take effect.
And I've done everything short of foreplay and sacraficing a neighbors kid to get this to work, no go.
But worked fine before the first patch... go figure.

But plainly it is not good enough.
It tells me I don't have 3 GB free like the previous patch because C: drive only has 1 GB free! Duh! Dang it. What was the trick for this patch? Extract files to somewhere and then what? I have 36 GB free on my other drive!

The '3d downloads'download page linked from the story has the patch dated at the 16th. Surely it hasn't been out that long? Blues couldn't be so slow as to write a story a whole week late?

Had that same problem. If I engage "not full" and "occupied" at the same time, I get zero servers found. The only way I can get it to work without having to refresh 3000 servers every update is to choose "occupied" by itself as the vast majority of the servers out there are empty.

I'm still waiting for them to fix the unresponsive browser after changing an option. Only way I can get it to refresh is quit and restart the game.

Any idea how to get it to recognise your filters again after it's decided they aren't important anymore..?
