Civilization IV Demo [November 23, 2005, 09:43 am ET] - Viewing Comments

A demo for Civilization IV is now available, offering the chance to sample the latest installment in Firaxis' era-spanning turn-based strategy series. The demo allows games that can be played out for 100 turns. The 314 MB download is available on 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games, Filecloud, FileFront, Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, GameSpot, Playfuls, and Worthplaying. Update: It turns out there are incremental June DirectX updates in the latest distribution included in the demo that are not readily available elsewhere, so this turns out to be a case where the larger version is more desirable, as there apparently can be issues installing the demo when the DirectX has been stripped.

I am getting so tired of the BS involved with PC gameing, one of these days I am just going to say 'fuck it' and get another hobby.
No, you won't. Same reason that I won't. Despite the shit that comes with PC gaming it still reigns supreme as *the* entertainment platform. After all, part of the fun of PC gaming (at least to me) is the technical aspect of it all.

Now if only I could scrape together the money for a new AMD/7800 GTX setup..

I'd never played a Civ before, and laughed when I saw the alarm in Civ IV. Now I use it.

Patch screwed up my game, it no longer runs. I am getting so tired of the BS involved with PC gameing, one of these days I am just going to say 'fuck it' and get another hobby.

I have a 9800 Pro, and have had zero issues with the game.....at least, technical related issues. Issues with eating, sleep, etc are a whole other story.
Same here (9800 pro). No issues except lack of time. In fact... /me leaves to play CivIV

There are NOT major issues with this game. Maybe some people are having bad technical issues, but the majority are not. Civ4 has not once crashed on me and I've but more hours into the game than I'd care to admit. I have an nVidia on both Desktop and Laptop PC's, so I cant speak for ATI users.

I am still looking forward to the patch, just to fix some of the minor gameplay imbalances.

Ok I wasted a 300 mb download cause the download from 3d Gamers gives some stupid DirectX error. And how do I know it won't happen at another site? WTF

If you got ATI--get ready to jump through a few hoops to get it to run, memory leaks, lock ups requiring hard reboots, CTD (lots of crashes to desk tops).
I haven't had any real problems with my X800XL... I only recall one crash to desktop in the later stages of the game, so now I tend to save every 5 or 10 minutes - that's about on par with most modern games. NEway, I found Civ3 very good and it had lots of little nuances that are lacking from Civ4, even if some key aspects of the game were lacking - I do prefer Civ4 but I still haven't found the Auto-End Turn feature and a few others that I found so useful before.

@AcidDrone

GW isn't meant to be played alone, at the least you need to have a full party (this ranges from 4-8 people in a group). It also sounds to me like you never made it past the pre-searing area, which is essentially a large tutorial and is definately not a good representation of the game after that point.

I'm in the Blue Conclave (the unofficial Blue's Guild) so that also makes things a good deal more fun. Then there's also the PvP portion, which is surprisingly deep. I bought the game a few days after release, I have 450+ hours into it and still play daily.

Once I start playing CivIV games on maps larger than 'Tiny' that may change, however...

28. Re: No subject Nov 23, 19:03 DedEye

I have an X800xT PE and have the full version of the game: no issues. Halsey is right: best Civ since Civ II. I haven't played it enough to know if it's the best Civ yet (my g/f has taken a shining to WoW)

It's good they put out a demo because a lof of civ fans felt burned by Civ 3 when it first came out. I know at least half a dozen of my friends who will not buy this version until they can try it first because of that.

OK WHAT'S THE GAG HERE?

"Setup has determined you need to install DirectX"
"Click next to begin"
I click next.
"Exit setup" "Are you sure you want to cancel the setup?"

What what? Did I miss something. How do I install the demo? THX

26. Re: No subject Nov 23, 18:25 Marvin T. Martian

It's too bad they couldn't have gotten a patch out for the game before they got a demo out. Just a heads up-the full game has MAJOR MAJOR problems. Just check out any CIV IV site. If you got ATI--get ready to jump through a few hoops to get it to run, memory leaks, lock ups requiring hard reboots, CTD (lots of crashes to desk tops). They briefly releases a patch then pulled it because of a bug. My game is just taking up H/D space until a patch comes out. The game plays fine, but when you get a crash every few turns in the later stages of the game, it's just not worth the effort.

25. Re: No subject Nov 23, 18:22 AcidDrone

not to hijack the thread or start a flame war but in re to bucky and guild wars, how do you play it or get into it? i bought it when i was taking a break from WoW and i barley got a char to level 5 or so before I found it the be painful to play, maybe its just the horribly difficult solo areas or i was doing something wrong.

But i went back to wow after trying GW and never really tried it again.

ok, so now you got your demo...
anybody who still doesn't get a copy for themselves can kindly line up to be shot

23. Re: No subject Nov 23, 17:04 Quboid

All the more reason for a demo (I know you didn't dispute this Pitiful). If a demo boosts sales by 20%, a demo for a 2,000,000 * selling game is more useful than for a 100,000 selling game.

Further more, Civ has a larger non-hardcore following than most, people for whom £35 on a game is a pretty big purchase that they're not going to make without research so a demo's ideal. These are also people with crappy laptops who are worried about whether or not it would run.

* Warning: My Civ 4 sales figures pulled out my ass.

22. Re: No subject Nov 23, 16:41 PiTiFUL

As far as I know Civ4 is number 1 in sales, heh and Civ4 pre-order edition is number 10 in sales. Its Civ, it rocks, its eating up all my free time and time that isnt free
