Quake 4 Demo Glitch [November 24, 2005, 11:02 am ET] - Viewing Comments

The Quake 4 demo released last night was apparently issued prematurely, and the following note describes the situation and plans for a follow-up:

Here's the deal, the QUAKE 4 demo that is on a few sites is an untested version of the demo that was inadvertently on id's FTP. The FTP has since been updated, but not before this incomplete version got out. The multiplayer portion of the demo doesn't work online at the moment. This version is not tested and not final, so if you can let folks know that they should wait for the final version that we're expecting early next week it would help.

65. Full version better than expected Nov 26, 18:17 Ouch

I got a chance to try out the full version and it was better than I expected. My expectations were fairly low but after trying someone's full version, I went out and bought this. Raven did a better than usual job of level design.

I liked Quake 4. The details put into the maps are incredible. I especially liked some of the somewhat darker areas where you couldn't see the wall and floor textures, but the lights on the textures still created an outline so you could see where to go... it was almost like.. Disneyland! The gameplay is pretty standard, however.

Anyhow, I've played a little bit of MP, now, and while it's not bad, it really needs some work. The weapons could use more tweaking, as well as the player movement. The physics kind of throws things off and can make movement in some places a bit out of place (ie, strafing and clipping the top of an incline will send you shooting up an extra foot or so).

So I was correct, you pulled it out of your ass.
I guess you can't fathom what "primary development platform" means, can you?

BTW, since I provided the link you asked for, it seems the only thing I need to "pull out of my ass"...is you... [j/k]

Also, the issue with respect to 3d API development is far more complex than merely Proprietary vs. Non-proprietary, and always has been. Aspects like "support" and "advancement" of APIs in general, not to mention the development tools that go along with them, are certainly critical to any intelligent person's assessment. D3d wins hands down in those respects.

Last, never forget that all APIs are entirely secondary to the games developers create with them. That's the most important point of them all. Right now, the "proprietary" API, as you put it, is chosen 19 times out of 20 by game developers in preference to the "non-proprietary" API. In short, developers just don't care about it like you do--what they are interested in is expense, support, and development tools when it comes to *any* API they contemplate using for their games.

56. Re: I finally played Q4 demo! Nov 25, 17:45 Prez

anyone really believe anyone bought a known MP franchise game for SP?

Well, yeah. I do. The developers said that Quake 2 was far and away the biggest money maker of the first three, and that they felt single-player was the reason. With that in mind they stated many times that Q4 was being designed first and foremost as a single-player game.

EDIT : And when I get around to buying it along with the 356 other new releases I am interested in, it will be for the SP. I could care less about MP Quake.

"That said, the game features the coolest extendable bridges EVER."

i noticed that as well. It also has that fantastic room inside the core of the computer featuring what had to be synapse type beams of light. I really like Q4. The attention to detail in the maps are incredible. Raven have very talented artists and level designers. I haven't tried the DM. Besides the lag problems i hear about, why does everyone not like it? It can't be that bad can it?

Hmm, the game demo isn't too bad. I really like the second level/part with the trenches. Very cool. Almost, it felt like Terminator movies in the future war against Skynet!

I wonder if there is a lot of these types of environments? I wasn't impressed with the first level. It was like DOOM 3
There are a few more places where you get to fight outside, but nothing more in the way of trenches. TBH, the more of the game you play, the closer the graphics and environments get to D3 (pre Dig Site/Hell, anyway). They're better looking and more detailed than in D3, but there's not a whole lot to distinguish them..

That said, the game features the coolest extendable bridges EVER. There isn't a single other title on the shelves at the moment that can compete with Q4 in the field of animated extendable bridges.

but I do like how the Stroggs scared me breaking into the pipes. I was leaning on the wall walking, and bam! Scared me!
Yeah.. never happens again.

I do like the flashlight on the gun. How about the other guns?
The MG is by far the most useful/used weapon in the game thanks to the fact that it's also your flashlight and sniper rifle. Probably the most useful MG I've ever found in a game, actually.

Between it and the shotty you're covered for the entire game except where the odd mob is simply less annoying to kill with a rocket or something.

That's not to say the other weaps don't so their jobs (although I found the RG to be almost entirely useless until you get it upgraded, since it's weak, slow firing, and all the mobs charge you anyway). The upgraded NG is freakin' sweetness with the homing nails, for example. OTOH, I don't think I ever killed anything with the LG.. it's utterly pointless until upgraded, and even then didn't seem to be doing all that much. The GL is pretty dull as well..

Honestly though, with the AI being the way it is in Q4, 99.9% of the time you're just better using the scope and rapid-fire on the MG until whatever you're shooting at has closed to within shotty range.

I like the introduction. Nice umm gibbed bodies in space. Nice trick. I like the drop ship that reminded me of Aliens movie.
Yeah, if the starfield doesn't give you a seizure, that little sequence is very slick

As much as I hate this game, I do have to give Raven/id credit for putting some really nice scripted set-pieces into the game. Some of the best I've seen anywhere, actually, which is why it's such a shame they're always bracketed by the abysmal gameplay, or marred by the lame dialogue, etc.

One near the end of the game is just plain flippin' incredible though. Definite kudos to Raven for that.. they should just stop trying to make games and shop themselves out as the World's premier scripting house instead, IMO.

Does the game even support co-operative play like Quake2 and original DOOM games?
Neh. Perhaps a mod will show up, but I wouldn't expect a full play-through to be possible; there are more than a few on-rails segments where you're just rooted in place firing, and I don't see those taking too kindly to a second player..

What are you talking about? Quake? Oh yeah, that franchise that featured one game with a good single player part without a story arch, one with a story arch in SP, then one game continuing the second, and in between there was one game without SP. Quite the anti-SP franchise you make it out to be...

Btw: Yes, I mainly bought it for SP... play mostly WoW or a quick fix of DoD:S online now, so that's enough for me.

q4 registering between the Halo demo and the SOF2 demo...wow, color me impressed?

also, 2 people told me that they think the reason why Q4 is ranking so low in terms of "played"..is because people are playing Q4 for single player? anyone really believe anyone bought a known MP franchise game for SP?
cuz i dont

Multiplayer was very weak. Just like Q3A. Dunno if I still want this game. I like the introduction. Nice umm gibbed bodies in space. Nice trick. I like the drop ship that reminded me of Aliens movie.

Music in trench scene was good! I wonder what song that is.

Hey Smack Dabb, is playing a solid 82% game (GameRankings) really comparable to ass-rape for you? Good god, maybe you should stop playing games before you really get emotionally scarred, eh? I can just imaging you sitting at your computer having a generally decent time shooting stuff up in a game while simultaneously screaming up a storm of pain and humiliation.

I just finished Quake 4 and while some of the room designs were extremely impressive and very true to Quake 2 architecture, the gameplay itself was very average. It was still fun.
