On September 6, 1622 the heavily laden treasure galleon of King Philip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet struck, as reef and sank, in a raging hurricane near the Florida Keys. Tons of gold, silver and other precious cargo, including emeralds from the rich emerald deposits of the Muzo mines in Colombia, were lost to the sea.
