19th May, 2002. David wins the World Circular Chess Championship in Lincoln. On 19th May, 2002, David took part in the annual World Circular Chess Championship, held in Edward King House in the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral. The event was sponsored by The Duke William Hotel, and attracted thirty-two players, including two from the Netherlands and one from Finland. David defeated the reigning four-time champion, Francis Bowers, in the last seconds of a tense final round to take the title. David was later presented with the trophy at The Duke William Hotel. Second place went to the former world champion, Herman Kok. Many thanks to Sharon Hopkinson, owner of the comfortable Duke William Hotel, Bailgate, Lincoln, for her hospitality, and to David McLeish, the promoter of the event, for his kind support. The championship was organised by The Circular Chess Society of Lincoln, who meet every Thursday evening in the Tap & Spile pub. Circular chess has become increasingly popular since its rediscovery eight years ago, and represents an enjoyable variant of the game, well suited to informal play with traps for the unwary. We are indebted to Richard Orange, publicist of the CCS, for showing us around the historic city of Lincoln and ensuring a good turnout for the tournament. David is looking forward to defending his title in Lincoln next year. |
