CHS 40 Year Reunion of 1963 Students

(written by Andrew Caripis)

Approximately 80 past students and teachers of Camberwell High, from the year 1963, met at the school for a 40 year reunion on Friday evening, November 14th, 2003.

In a night of back-slapping, reminiscing and bubbling conviviality, the attendees were first addressed by 1963 Matriculant and reunion instigator, Stephan Taussig, who welcomed the throng and set the tone for an unforgettable evening.

The current school Principal, Ms Elida Brereton, also gave an address, explaining how Camberwell High has developed into one of the leading government schools in Victoria, serving over 1,200 students.

Ms Brereton led the group on a quick tour of the school to observe the substantial changes in buildings and facilities over the past 40 years. This was followed by a group photograph of all the attendees.

The past teachers in attendance were Mr John Brook, Mr Tom Burns, Mr David Collins (also School Principal 1977-1986), Mr Don Gibb, Mr Robert Ewins and Mr Jim Hobill.

Past teachers, unable to attend, who sent all their best wishes, were Dr (Miss) Alexandra Cameron, Mr Athol Jones, Mr Tony Pugsley and Mr Joe Rich.

Among the students of 1963 are Professor John Dobson, a leading physicist; Ray Turk Ellis, a former gymnast; Elijah Moshinsky, Director of Opera at London's Covent Garden; Ron Peck, former player and President of VFA football club, Camberwell; Dr George Quong, Director, Radiation Oncology at Melbourne's Austin Hospital; Andrea Savige, whose father planted the trees which now dominate the nature strips along Prospect Hill Road, Camberwell; Harry Unger, a leading Opthalmological Surgeon.
