Deep Sjeng is a program with personality, the pictures below shows the personalities in action (click for full size)

dspersonalities

dspe

We have included several personalities:

Monkey: We've taught a monkey how to play chess! Well, lets say he knows the rules ;-) The ideal opponent for absolute beginners or for those who just have an urgent need for a complete and swift victory. Estimated < 800 ELO

Patzer: A beginning player that more or less understands the basics. His tactical vision is still horrible though, and much positional finesse is not something you should expect either. But you'd better not leave too much pieces hanging... Estimated 800-1000 ELO

Beginner: His tactical vision has been developed a bit further, and some positional understanding is beginning to form. Still makes a lot of mistakes though. Beatable, but keep concentrated, or you'll need the takeback function! Estimated 1000-1200 ELO

Amateur: Has a fair tactical vision and understands the core positional concepts reasonably well. No too shoddy to try the occasional combination. Blunders are still common, but usually not that obvious. Estimated 1200-1600 ELO

Semi Pro: An expert player that will give you a run for the money. Not a pansy in any way, but lacking the last finesse to be a top player. Doesn't make mistakes often, but they're still there, and it's up to you to spot them and take advantage of them! Estimated 1600-2000 ELO

Pro: A top player in every way. Good positional understanding, good tactical abilities, and little errors. But, being only human, there's still the occasional slip up every now and then. Estimated 2000-2400 ELO

GM Personalities (Estimated 2400-2700+ ELO)

Kasparov: Does he need an introduction? There was a lot of effort involved in cramming him into a shiny little disk, but you'll instantly recognize his sharp, edge-of-your seat playing style. A tactically very strong player that likes risks and goes for the kill every time.

Kramnik: A more quiet player that slowly grinds himself to a win using accurate positional play. But don't be fooled - given the chance, he'll gladly play into a complicated mess and out tactic you as well!

Tal: A crazy, sacrificial player that is always on the attack. Hates to be on the defensive and *loves* to give up material for an attack or the initiative.

Tarrasch: A dogmatic player from the days when chess was still developing. Keeps the basic positional themes close to it's hearth, but is occasionally a bit less flexible than contemporary players.

Diepeveen: A personality contributed by FM Vincent Diepeveen, which is reported to have a highly developed positional understanding.

Beancounter: This one might remind you of the chess programs you had BEFORE you discovered Deep Sjeng. Materialistic and tactically using raw power, only for the nostalgic people among us.

Gambit Kitten: The 'little brother' of Gambit Tiger. Maybe it's not as mature as it's big brother yet, but the family traits are obvious. Very strong, and goes for the throat each time. Watch those claws!

Default: The best balance of all of the above we could find in a lot of testing, this is the default and strongest setting. A good positional player with a lot of knowledge, a world-class tactician and being dynamic enough to handle any kind of position it encounters, we just know you are going to be permanently addicted after your first game.

And you know what's the best? With Deep Sjeng's built-in personality editor you can create your own personalities.

Want to make a silicon copy of your favorite GM? No problem!

Want to prepare against that sturdy defender in your chess club that likes knight play? No problem! Want an opponent tailored exactly to your own playing level ? Again, Deep Sjeng is just what you want.

Multiprocessor support

Deep Sjeng can make use of up to 8 processors, this can give it a speed advantage over other programs which don't have this capability. This is also an advantage with the latest generation of processors from Intel which supports hyperthreading, only multiprocessor capable programs can take advantage of this new feature. On a dual CPU up to 85% speed increase can be expected compared to a single CPU. Of course it also works fine on a single processor.

UCI and Winboard compatible

The Deep Sjeng chess engine is UCI and Winboard compatible. This makes it possible not only to use the engine with the ChessPartner interface but also in other interfaces supporting the UCI or Winboard protocol.

Multivariation mode

In this mode the chess engine not only looks for the best move, but for the best 'n' moves. This feature is handy for game analysis.

Nalimov Endgame Table bases

Table bases (abbreviated to TB) are giant sets of databases stored with perfect end-game knowledge and this knowledge will be used by Deep Sjeng for its internal calculations. It means that the chess program understands some very basic end-games without the need of calculating nor programmed chess knowledge because the information is simply retrieved from the TB (table base). Al the 3 and 4 man and some 5 man table bases are included on the CD-ROM version. Other table bases can be downloaded from the Internet. As one of the very few programs, Deep Sjeng supports the use of 6 man table bases.

ChessPartner 5.3 interface

The latest ChessPartner interface is included. General information about ChessPartner can be found here...

Linux and MacOSX version of engine

As a bonus, the CD-ROM contains a linux and MacOSX version of the Deep Sjeng engine. This version can be used with xboard. Note that these versions are free extra's and unsupported.

GM Alterman has been busy setting up a typical anti computer position and is getting ready to storm the kingside. He did not, however, expect the brilliancy Sjeng was about to uncork:

15... Nxc3+!!

White's weakened kingside combined with black's pressure along the c file more than make up for the material disadvantage. Deep Sjeng is the only program we know of that can find this move instantly.

16.bxc3 Nd5 17.Rc1 cxd4 18.cxd4 Nc3+ 19.Rxc3 Rxc3 20.Kb2 Qc7 21.Rh1 Bd5
22.Ra1 Rc8 23.Ne1 and mate in a few moves 0-1

The game below is a correspondence game between Claude Bourgoin and Deep Sjeng it not easy to know who is the computer

By careful maneuvering black has blocked two white pieces. Black now has an easy win.

26.Nf2 Rd6 27.h4 h6 28.Nh3 hxg5 29.Nxg5 Bxg5 30.hxg5 Rg6 31.Rf4 Rxg5+ 32.Kf1 Ke7 33.Rh4 Rf5+ 34.Ke1 g5 35.Rh5 Bf3 36.Rh6 Rd8 37.Rh3 g4 38.Rg3 Rh5 0-1

Did you guess it ? Deep Sjeng was playing black.
