Animax Hong Kong Comics Festival 2004: Comics, Games, Game Girls and Cosplayers [Image Gallery]

 What the title of this article nicely describes is for many people in Hong Kong one of the biggest events taking place every year. Lik Sang was there again this year and came back with details and some great pictures (thanks to pro photographer Vince Chan).
The three main themes of the fair were the Hong Kong Comics Festival, Hong Kong Game Fair and the X-ZONE. New this year was the Game Girl Competition, which surprisingly didn't judge the girls by their gameplay, but by the usual stuff. Heck, we don't even know if they've ever played a game because it was not a requirement of the competition at all. According to reports from the fair management, the Game Girl Contest was a big success and one of the reasons for many to be there. If the fair management is reading this now: You might want to consider having girls you don't have to explain how to hold a controller or change the name of the contest ;-)
The Hong Kong Comics Festival was first started with comics as its core attraction. The event was so successful that the number of exhibitors with a wider range of goods has increased along with a record number of visitors, year by year. It has become THE summer carnival for comics, children, toys, e-games, and most important of all, for FUN. This years show took place over 5 days, attracting 381,000 visitors. While the exhibition info of 2004 said again that the show takes place on 120,000 square feet, it was much bigger than last year this time and was separated into three large areas for all of the themes, and the main stage of course.
For pure gamers, unfortunately, the show didn't have to offer that much. While Microsoft was of course there (the Xbox and Xbox Live is very popular in Hong Kong) and we also ran into the folks of SNK Neo Geo Hong Kong, the game part of the fair was focusing on the King of Game Players Competition 2004 with people playing WarCraft and Counter Strike. There were also a few companies with their Chinese RPG and online games, but nothing of large scale or of interest for import gamers.
This year's name of the fair comes from their main sponsor Animax who officially opened up a TV channel in Hong Kong. Animax is a 24-hour non-stop animation channel featuring the top anime shows Japan has to offer.
All this was rounded up by the X-ZONE with a Hip Hop competition, some kind of band and dance compos, and a flea market (waste of time). There was also a huge comic book store this time, it took about 20% of the complete floor space and they must have really had millions of cartoons for sale (the book store is another main attraction, because you can really get lots of stuff there you normally don't get).
