Grandmaster
Sarunas Sulskis of Lithuania won the 13th Goodricke International Open Chess tournament, while K Sasikiran produced the
second best-ever performance by an Indian finishing second at the Alekhine Chess club,
Calcutta here today. Sasikiran scored a fluent victory over GM Andrey Shariyazdanov of Russia in 40 moves to take his tally to eight points, half-a-point behind
Sulskis, the
second best performance by a home player in the tournament's 13-year history.
Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand in his only appearance at this
prestigious event, tied for the first place during 1992. Requiring just a draw to clinch the top prize, Sulskis split the point with GM Alexey Kuzmin of Russia in the last round today to annex the title and pocket
the winner's purse of USD 2430. The two players agreed to the draw after 26 moves in the exchange variation of the
Queen's Gambit Declined. While Sulskis topped the table with 8.5 points, Kuzmin finished third on seven points.
Four other GMs - Russian Ruslan
Sherbakov,
Slovakian Drazen Shermek, Iranian Ehasan Ghaem Meghamai and Ukraninan Sergey Ovsejevitsch - finished on seven points each, but Kuzmin
piped the rest with a better tie-break score. The only other Indian to figure in the prize list this year was veteran GM Dibyendu
Barua, who finished 15th.
Ovsejevitsch drew with Shermek and was placed fourth while Maghamai, Sermek and Sherbakov claimed the fifth, sixth and seventh spots respectively.
