Parsvnath International Rating Tournament, New Delhi
October 2nd to 10th, 2003

Ramesh Champion, Hari goes down to Dzhumaev

Ramesh with the Parsvnath TrophyInternational Master R B Ramesh of Indian Oil Corporation secured the Parsvnath International Rating tournament title, with 9.0 points from eleven rounds, here today. This follows, his grand show in Lucknow, where he won the Piloo Modi Championship a fortnight ago.

Joining Ramesh on top of the table were GMs Alexander Fominyh (Russia) and Marat Dzhumaev (Uzbekistan), as  they scored fighting victories over Tahidov and Harikrishna, respectively.

Ramesh continued to be in fine nick, as he handed a heavy Sicilian defeat to International Master Sriram Jha. Securing the centre early, Ramesh bottled Jha's light colored bishop, gaining a significant advantage. Going in for the kill, Ramesh gave his queen for two rooks, finishing the game in 30 moves.

Harikrishna, lost his fisrt game of the event, a crucial one at that after 83 moves and five hours of play. Credit  should go to GM Dzhumaev, who hung on preciously, in a very difficult queen and rook ending, where the chips were loaded against him. Just when the victory and a share in title looked within the reach, Hari erred giving Dzhumaev a place in the podium.

The success of a tournament is largely determined by organisation, and making of the IM and GM Norms. The tournament smoothly conducted by International Arbiter R S Tiwari, saw three Norms being made. While R B Ramesh made his final Grandmaster Norm, Abhijit Gupta and R Balasubramanium made their maiden International Master Norms.
