Asian (Under 16 & 18) Chess Championship 2004, Tehran

Arun Prasad and Vinuthna strike Gold

India's Nalluri Vinuthna and National Sub-Junior Champion S Arun Prasad reigned supreme clinching under-18 girls' and under-16 Asian Chess titles respectively at Tehran in Iran. 

Indian boys and girls asserted their supremacy at the Asian level claiming nine out of 12 medals, including two gold, three silver and four bronze medals in four categories. 

Indian girls proved best in the under-18 category winning all the medals. Eesha Karvade claimed the silver and Women Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika settled for the bronze. 

Vinuthana, who defeated compatriot M Rajadharshini in the ninth and final round, was under pressure to score the full point and she did precisely that with black pieces in the last round to reach 7.5. 

In the boys section, Anton Fillipov of Uzbekistan claimed the top prize with the highest score of seven points out of a possible 9. 

Double IM-Norm holder Abhijeet Gupta, who was just a half point behind finishing second while former Asian Junior Champion Deepan Chakravarthy claimed the third spot.
